Destiny's Child was well known to anyone who listened to pop music during the late-'90s and early 2000s, but the group's journey to the top of the charts was a long one. It began in Houston, Texas, where Beyoncé Knowles met rapper LaTavia Roberson at an audition and the girls decided to form their own group. They brought in more performers including a young vocalist named Kelly Rowland and before long, there were six young women in a group they dubbed Girls Tyme. The group's sound involved a mixture of singing and rap, all performed with carefully choreographed dance moves, and the girls practiced their performances on a near constant basis. Their hard work propelled them all the way to a 1993 appearance on the TV series "Star Search" (CBS, 1983-1995), but after they failed to win the competition, the girls regrouped. Knowles' father Matthew became their full-time manager, and they cut their lineup down to just four. In 1996, they finally landed a recording contract with Columbia Records, and by 1998, they released their self-titled debut. Though members Roberson and LeToya Luckett would leave in 1999 and be replaced by singer Michelle Williams, the group would continue to grow in popularity with their massively successful sophomore album The Writing's On the Wall, which sold over 11 million copies worldwide. The almost as successful Survivor would follow in 2001, with the group's final album, Destiny Fulfilled coming in 2005. By this point, Knowles, Rowland, and Williams had blossoming solo careers to attend to, and so during a concert in Spain, the group announced their disbandment.
