Frances-Anne Solomon
Born in England to Trinidadian parents and raised in Canada, Frances-Anne Solomon became one of the most prominent voices representing the Caribbean experience in film. After attending the University of Toronto, Solomon returned to England as an adult to begin her career, training in TV production for two years at the BBC Production Training Program. By 1990, Solomon was writing, producing, and directing her first film, "I Is a Long Memoried Woman" (1990). After working as a script editor on a 1992 episode of the series "Screenplay" (BBC, 1986-1993) and creating and producing the documentary mini-series "Siren Spirits" (BFI, 1995), Solomon returned to the helm, directing the features "What My Mother Told Me" (1995) and "Peggy Su!" (1997). She would then wade back into the waters of television, creating the irreverent comedy series "Lord Have Mercy!" (Vision TV, 2003) and the documentary series "Literature Alive" (Omni 1, 2005-2006). She would earn more accolades as a director with the drama "A Winter Tale" (2007), even as she continued to promote thoughtful television through CaribbeanTales, her own film production and distribution company with the documentary series "Heart Beat" (Bravo!, 2007-08). In 2017, Solomon won acclaim as a director yet again, this time for her biopic of Caribbean diplomat Eric Cross, "Hero" (2017).
