Jeanne Labrune

Writer/director Jeanne Labrune is best known for her debut feature film, "Sand and Blood," which was released in 1987 and garnered considerable critical acclaim for its story of a bullfighter (Patrick Catalifo) who loses the passion to perform any longer. Before the release of the film, Labrune had worked solely in television, directing and writing television movies like "Les Prédateurs" and "La Digue." After the success of "Sand and Blood," she returned to big screen work four years later with the intense drama "Sans un Cri," about parents trying to cope with their mentally disturbed child. In 1995, she helmed her own version of "Jules et Jim," which drew more on the source novel than it did Truffaut's 1962 film. (Nevertheless, it was difficult for many viewers to look beyond the original film.) Labrune teamed up with actress Nathalie Baye for her next two films, the drama "Beware of My Love" and the comedy "Tomorrow's Another Day." Her script for "Vatel," a historical romance she originally wrote in the early 1990s and intended to direct herself, was finally made into a movie in 2000, starring Tim Roth and directed by Roland Joffé. In 2010, Labrune's "Special Treatment" was released, starring Isabelle Huppert as a prostitute who leaves the profession and starts a relationship with a troubled psychiatrist.
