Peter White
In 1968, Peter White was an upcoming actor. He had studied at the Yale School of Drama and was beginning to make progress in his chosen field. After he toured with Myrna Loy in the play "Barefoot in the Park," she suggested he take the role of Alan McCarthy in the off-Broadway production of Mart Crowley's "The Boys in the Band," a story about several gay friends coming together for a birthday party. He thought it would be career suicide to take on the role of a sexually ambiguous character in a "gay play" and so balked at the idea, but she persuaded him to take a chance. The play was an immediate success, and White suddenly found his career taking off. In 1970, he played the same role in the film production of the play and from there moved on to television where he began to get regular roles. By the '80s, he was appearing regularly on television, in particular on late night soap operas such as "Falcon Crest," "Knots Landing," and "Dallas." His most enduring role, and certainly the one he is best known for, is as Lincoln "Linc" Tyler, attorney and member of the founding family of the fictional town Pine Valley on the daytime soap "All My Children"--a role he has played off and on since 1976. Peter White died November 1, 2023, at the age of 86.
