Scott Lowell, who played gay accountant Ted Schmidt in the American version of "Queer as Folk," has not taken his fame lightly. Since appearing from 2000 to 2005 on the acclaimed series centered around the lives of homosexual men, he has used his visibility to speak out on behalf of various human rights organizations, including GLAAD. Prior to his turn on the show, the Colorado-born actor performed in theatre and landed guest-starring roles on the drama "Early Edition" and the sitcom "Caroline in the City." He also had a small part in "The Debtors," a 1999 independent comedy about a trio of compulsives who create mayhem together, which starred Randy Quaid and Michael Caine. Around the time "Queer as Folk" was taking off, he was featured in the "Frasier" episode, "There's Something About Dr. Mary" as Chuck Ranberg, a radio producer with a noticeable speech impediment. During the latter '00s, he appeared in more independent films, but likely reached a wider audience guest-starring in the animated series "American Dad!," the action-drama "Heroes," and as a spokesperson for humanitarian causes.
