      Critics Consensus

Its heart is in the right place, but what starts as a promising exercise devolves into an overlong, unevenly directed disappointment.

Steve D Nowhere near as clever as it thinks it is. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/01/24 Full Review Amber C It took me all day to finish it. It did not hold my attention at all. Another thing, the movie completely whitewashed the likes of Meyer Lansky. The vibe I got was ‘oh, those poor rich folks are suffering!' Its a complete Miami Exile fairy tale of pre revolutionary Cuba. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/08/22 Full Review mary d The film is filled with beautiful shots of the musical nightlife of Havana. Against that scenery we watch first a family and then a couple be torn to shreds by the ferocious politics of extremists and their guns. It is not so much a political movie as a personal story taking place in a political time. Andy Garcia is able to show deep emotion without overacting, he is fascinating here. Supporting characters all do masterful work with Bill Murray acting as an amanuensis to both story characters and the audience. You are left sorrowful about the destruction of culture that comes with violent revolutions and the knowledge that people without a political mindset are always "collateral damage." Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Great show , really enjoyed it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member "She was beautiful Havana." A journey into the heart of Havana, its clubs, in a heartbreaking time of its history, a challenged romance in the middle of it, a family tore apart. One of the best movie depicting the subject made by Andy Garcia himself with the aspect of a Corleone, offering also one his most touching and personal role. A cry for his country, and a music still haunting you. Bittersweet symphony. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member It's a bit fanciful, but it does create the mood of the time, and historical events and attitudes are poignant and well-placed throughout the film. This was Andy Garcia's labor of love, and I think he did a good job of relating the tragedy of Cuba in a very personal way; the viewer can imagine witnessing the events portrayed through the eyes of a Cuban family. James Christopher Times (UK) Andy Garcia's preposterous vanity project The Lost City is an all-singing, all-dancing version of the Cuban Revolution. Rated: 1/5 Dec 5, 2008 Full Review Cath Clarke Guardian The script is scrupulously even-handed, but Garcia can't seem to get a grip on this sprawl. Rated: 2/5 Dec 5, 2008 Full Review David Gritten Daily Telegraph (UK) Great music and costumes, but with a woeful plot and jaw-droppingly stilted dialogue. Cuban-born Garcia's main complaint against Fidel seems to be that rich, corrupt Cubans could no longer dance the night away. Rated: 1/5 Dec 5, 2008 Full Review Amber Wilkinson Eye for Film By the half way point I was beginning to take back everything I said re Steven Soderbergh's dull-as-ditchwater Che: Part II - even he manages to drum up more tension than this. Rated: 1.5/5 Jul 6, 2010 Full Review Fernando F. Croce CinePassion Unfolds like a series of as outtakes from Hollywood productions Aug 30, 2009 Full Review Stella Papamichael Film4 There may be a good film here, but it struggles to break free of the cumbersome framework.
