After the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, three young New Yorkers sign up to fight on behalf of Uncle Sam, and the fates of these recruits vary. A stockbroker progresses from idealist to disillusioned alcoholic; a failed dancer quickly embraces the army's lifestyle and philosophy; and a high school dropout finds that army life is as harsh as his former existence in the ghetto. In this depiction of indecision and ambivalence, war isn't hell so much as purgatory.

V.A. Musetto New York Post Anyone thinking of enlisting in the Army might want to take a look at Army of One, a compelling documentary by Canadian Sarah Goodman. Rated: 3/4 Jan 27, 2005 Full Review Dana Stevens New York Times Sarah Goodman's first feature-length documentary, Army of One, puts a bitterly ironic spin on the Army's best-known recruiting slogan, 'Be all that you can be.' Rated: 3/5 Jan 27, 2005 Full Review Laura Sinagra Village Voice If you can handle the truth, Sarah Goodman's entropic doc is as exquisite a basic training in banal U.S. Army culture as you're likely to find. Audience Member Ok look at how the patriotism that sprang out of the 9/11 attacks effected 3 americans, causing them to enlist and what happens to each of them, as one excels, one becomes suicidal and the other one goes AWOL. The filming and editing is pretty low budget, and some of the interviews seemed very forced, but it works for what it is, although it could have been better. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member An intriguing if not particularly surprising documentary on the road to deployment following 9/11.
