David Parkinson Empire Magazine Lacks the charisma or the ingenuity to hook mainstream audiences. Rated: 2/5 Dec 30, 2006 Full Review Neil Smith BBC.com We Shall Overcome is a well-made, refreshingly unsentimental fable, reminiscent of Dead Poets Society and 2005 Swedish potboiler Evil. Rated: 3/5 Nov 21, 2006 Full Review Nick Funnell Time Out It's enjoyably rousing, and cinematographer Lars Vestergard works miracles turning the Danish countryside into bright slices of Americana. Nov 16, 2006 Full Review Dorothy Woodend The Tyee (British Columbia) The film does not stint on the repercussions of violence, yet, at its heart, it is a story about hard-fought courage. Aug 22, 2017 Full Review Ryan Cracknell Calgary Movies Buoyed by likeable characters and the ever-dependable super teacher construct, We Shall Overcome builds into a better-than-solid underdog story. Mar 8, 2008 Full Review Amber Wilkinson Eye for Film Sometimes it's not what you say but the way that you say it that counts. That's certainly the case with this charming and beautifully acted Danish drama. Rated: 4/5 Dec 7, 2007 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member One of those rare films that reals you in as part of the story. Justice prevails with God's help. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Masterpiece Nelson Mandela and Dr Martin Luther King eat your heart out. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member "We Shall Overcome" is not only the greatest danish film ever made; it is also one of the most touching films this reviewer has ever seen. The astounding and tear-jerking performances by Denmark's finest actors and actresses reach Oscar-worthy heights in what can only be described as a 1 hour and 49 minute masterpiece of pure sentiment, hope and will to rise against oppression and fight for your right to dream out loud. There is nothing more genuine and redeeming than witnessing the liberation of the human mind, and that idea is delivered with such punch and conviction that you will feel your heart pounding like never before when this emotional roller coaster comes to its end. Ttrying to dissect it would be nearly impossible, because there is simply too much good to say about i, and there are too many feelings involved. The film goes far beyond lights, camera and action. It is a testimony to freedom as well as faith in the person we all have the potential to be, which is ourselves. To call it great atistry would be a huge understatement, but I guess you have to experience it yourself to really know just how perfect it is in every possible way. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member "For every school day there is a battle to be won," hated headmaster Lindum Svendsen (Bent Mejding) tells his pupils in Danish melodrama We Shall Overcome. Those words come back to haunt him when 13-year-old Frits (Janus Dissing Rathke), inspired by the speeches of Martin Luther King, decides to stand up against his petty tyranny. Set in the summer of 1969, Niels Arden Oplev's fact-based tale, a kind of Scandinavian If...., has us rooting for its young hero all the way.
