spencer p With it's comedy, it works; but with its romance, it nosedives. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Sassy Lubitsch musical. Jeanette warbles "Beyond the Blue Horizon," and Buchanan makes a rare American screen appearance. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member A broke countess runs away from marrying a duke and decides to go to Monte Carlo to make her fortune by gambling and catches the eye of a count. This is one of Ernst Lubitsch early musical comedies. The musical part is just okay for me (only one or two songs are any good, really) but the comedy is great. Lots of the jokes hold up (and it's surprisingly a bit racy too!). There's a sequence where there are three men singing about seducing women over tea but they couldn't look more...umm...not straight, I guess. I laughed. I can't help but wonder if that was deliberate or not or if that was just the way it was at the time. It is also such a fun film. Jeanette MacDonald was fantastic. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Jeanette MacDonald is about to marry an older prissy but very rich Duke. However, she gets cold feet and flees to Monte Carlo to try to spin her meagre savings into gold. Upon arrival, Jack Buchanan, a Count, spies her and starts plotting to woo and win her. He seemed creepy and undesirable, so I didn't realise he was the love interest -- this could be late-1920s style and attitudes or just me. He goes undercover as her hairdresser to be close and await his moment. It comes. This was directed by Lubitsch (although not funny enough to be one of his masterpieces, like The Shop around the Corner). It is also a musical but it pales in comparison to Love Me Tonight, MacDonald's flirtation with Maurice Chevalier (by Mamoulian). Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member this is the follow-up 2 the hit 'the love parade' another frothy lavish musical/comedy by the master lubitsch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member The pass of time has hurt this movie, as it is a little too dated for today's audience. Not as good as One Hour with you or The Smiling Lieutenant, partly because the male lead here doesn't have the charisma and charm of Chevalier.
