Macbeth

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A new take on Macbeth relies too heavily on nudity and violence, and ends up looking like a campy 1970s horror movie.

The play's power has been diluted by questionable editing, an overload of blandly stylized violence and the conspicuous suspicion that this whole thing is the predictable result of catering to base commercial instincts. Go to Full Review

Subtle it is not, yet it has its finger on the pulse of what really makes this classic play appealing to the masses. It's violent, it's energetic, and it's tremendous fun. Go to Full Review

Carl L @KomKetamine Dec 8 This movie uses the Shakespearean play almost word for word, which does not translate well into a modern setting. The characters are given no depth or extra story, the actors themselves seem to realize how horrible the script is, and nothing feels real. The scenes are shot trying to imitate other great crime movies, but comes off trying to feel both serious and comedic at the same time. There is also a weird, sexual energy shown throughout, which does align well with the setting; and the action cannot decide whether it wants to be gritty and violent, or hide it from the screen- neither are well executed anyways. See more 06/19/2015 a retelling of an old tale, different, I hope they go back to the editing room, the pace was off. See more 07/27/2013 Macbeth not only fails to successfully update Shakespeare's play to a contemporary but also fails to be a good movie. See more 01/05/2013 Polanski's is still the best. Nice to hear Shakespeare without a stuffy RP accent, but the performances are pretty mediocre across the board. That said, it does have probably the best ever visual treatment of Macbeth's "dagger of the mind." See more 11/29/2012 The film uses Shakespearean language but it doesn't seem to quite work for this modern adaptation where other have succeeded. The film is too much focused on shooting and awkward monologues and it just doesn't cut it. See more 06/18/2012 It was ok until about the last 45 minutes then it lost me. I know the play and I get that they were drug lords but I think the whole cop thing could have gone without. See more Read all reviews
