Alissa Wilkinson Paste Magazine Slipstream meanders into some lucidity by film's end, but it remains difficult to determine if it's a work born of genius or madness. Thom N Anthony Hopkins' attempt at making a fun movie about reality and acting ends up as a Lynchian indie flick. A lot is packed into the 90 minute runtime - don't expect to 'get it', because this film was made using a gestalt method not too different from Lynch's; to claim to understand a singular message relevant to every event and visual on-screen is the peak of hubris. Ignore the haters, form your own opinion. Though I rarely agree with Ebert, I agree with his sentiment that if you're sympathetic with the idea that Hopkins is intentionally doing something sharp and difficult, you'll be more satisfied than if you were hoping for a nice, tidy popcorn movie. ---------------------------------------'Sir Tony' includes a decent amount of playful self-insert jokes, making fun of his sequels, his salary, and his Welsh accent. These fourth-wall-breaks add a light touch, and Turturro's wacky acting prevent this from being an assemblage of vaguely interesting and vaguely unnerving images without the expected through-line. Don't feel bad when it abruptly ends and you wonder if you're stupider than the rest of the audience; even the actors didn't have a clue what the hell is going on in this script! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/05/25 Full Review Audience Member I know I'm in the minority, but I honestly thought this film was brilliant. Kind of a non-linear meditation on creativity and the commercialization of creativity and the environment that builds up around that. Both profound and silly at the same time. A little like life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member More incoherent than a drunk toddler speaking a foreign language. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting and bold stream-of-consciousness film by Anthony Hopkins about a man on the brink of death and the world he envisions in his transition. It's ultimately a bit of a failed attempt though. And this movie is just going to alienate most audiences... Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Pretty weird movie -- essentially about losing one's mind, I think, but I cannot tell for certain. And then the very end throws all of that out the window. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Frances H I love films like this one, which push boundaries and can be interpreted in many, many ways, perhaps unique to each viewer. There are so many different types of reality-dreams, imagination, the movies, books, ideas, mental problems, television, illness, approaching death--so many things influence our personal view of reality. But one thing is sure (if anything can be), no one's personal view of reality is the absolute. I can see why Hopkins didn't want anyone else to have final cut over himself on this film--it would alter his reality, and would have utterly spoiled the film.
