Jeffrey P Critics hate this, I’m not sure why. I caught the beginning of this late one night, it seemed interesting enough, but with a three hour runtime I had no choice but to save it for another day. A morally grey film that does drag a bit, and probably could have been shortened by an entire hour, as it often feels like it’s bordering on being a faith based drama, and that is dis-jarring and odd since faith based dramas typically don’t try to make us feel sorry about characters such as ‘Jerry.’ Maybe if based on a true story, the runtime and and other problematic areas could be justified, but this just seemed pointlessly dragged out... yet it still held my attention for the most part. The fact that it maintains focus and doesn’t lose attention over the course of a 165-minutes says something positive about it, which is why I don’t understand the very low critics reviews... but still, three hours is a long time and one should be able to guess the ending before it gets there. That said, I felt the soundtrack was the worst part. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/27/24 Full Review Jamie C Great movie true story .living with trauma is realize.real trauma Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/29/24 Full Review Rob V Very twisted! I love when a movie takes me out of my realm of decency and throws me into personal contemplation over dark emotions. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/26/24 Full Review Helena S This movie is definitely hard to watch but for good reason. It does not shy away from the most difficult realities and I think that's what might be off-putting to some people. The acting is outstanding, the direction is respectful to the delicate nature of the material and the music is beautiful! I can't believe a young Grace Caroline Currey is in this! Absolutely a must see Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/18/23 Full Review mamaboo c I do not understand the low rating by the critics for this movie. They need to allow the actual moviegoers - or at least a less "insider invested" cross section of the public to rate this movie - not industry "pros" (? I dont know how else to identify these people who are anything but a diverse selection of the general movie-watching public?) These critics appear to me to be numb to what REAL persons think. This movie was well written, directed with loving care and keeps the viewer engaged - I forgot I was watching a movie and became very engrossed in the whole thing. Isn't that what a movie is supposed to do? And the power punch at the end also does what good art should do - it makes you think about it long after it is over. The acting was top notch, the score was seemless, the cinematography beautiful. That's 5 stars to me. Watch the movie - it's free right now on YouTube (as of sept 2023) - and then tell me what you think. I am picky about movies, I despise useless scenes that waste time and add nothing to the plot. I don't like plot holes. I don't like bad acting (who does?). I do not like stories that are implausible unless they are fantasy/Sci fi - and even then, they need to make sense in regards to the science of the plot. I don't like bad edits, or any poor detail that robs attention from the story. Satire (or comedy) are things, that need to be in its place. unintended satire or comedy is horrible - as is unintended drama. That being said, this movie has everything a good movie should have. I really think the critics that gave this a low score did it for reasons other than giving an honest review. That's why I always look for myself. The last critics that I paid any attention to that understood what constitutes a great movie were Siskel and Ebert. They were never wrong. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/24/23 Full Review Audience Member The year's dullest movie has arrived: the deeply silly Badland, which is as dead as winter and twice as long.
