Audience Member I had previously read the novel of the same name by General Dallaire and this movie was completely faithful to it. I can't think of many movies that show the equivalent descent into PTSD and despair and madness that this film manages to do. When you consider all these scenes are true and there is nothing contrived or needed to be embellished you can really get a sense of how devastating war and genocide is to the human psyche. I couldn't recommend this movie enough. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Shake hands with diablo. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved the film for it's realism in many of the aspects of a peacekeepers mission, however it lost a lot of realism for me in other instances which drew away from the overall experience. I can remember being on the edge of my seat, and then the realism would be broken and I would sink back into my chair. However the overall story arch did tell a wonderful tale that was quite captivating and at other times heart wrenching. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member I think it is important to remember the tragedies that happened in Rwanda. I've always had a great respect for Romeo Dallaire. After seeing this movie, I have a different kind of respect however. This movie allows us to see the horrible things that happened through his eyes. This movie brought up all kinds of emotions within me. The most important/prevalent was how important it is to respect humanity, to respect all life and to uphold humanity and all life, at any cost. It made me feel very proud to be a Canadian and a member of the Canadian Armed Forces. I'd like to close with the appropriate motto of the CIC "ILLUMINATE VIAM" Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This film, despite its limited character viewpoints (some of the characters I wanted to see more of), delivers a rather real perspective of the 1990s Rwandan civil war, with an A+ performance from Roy Dupuis, and above-average cinematography. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member A hard hitting movie!!The problem persists to this day.Its really sad to see that the worlds great powers are getting together to Ruin such a beautiful place.Hopefully the Africans will end this senseless bloodshed and learn "one day" to live like brothers. Stephen Holden New York Times The best that can be said of the film is that it is an honorable dud. Rated: 2/5 Nov 12, 2010 Full Review Keith Uhlich Time Out Dallaire's stalwart stoicism offsets the horrors on display, which are filmed with expectedly solemn slickness. Rated: 3/5 Nov 10, 2010 Full Review Ernest Hardy Village Voice Though the film, based on Dallaire's memoir, can veer toward deification of the general, it's hugely effective in illustrating the grotesque power plays that led to the deaths of more than 800,000 Tutsis. Nov 9, 2010 Full Review James Wegg JWR Then as now, the world recoils as the various documentations of those horrors become available for all who wish to see. Rated: 4/5 Jul 23, 2009 Full Review Liz Braun Jam! Movies The filmmaking is a bit scrappy. Still, it's worth seeing. Rated: 3/5 Sep 28, 2007 Full Review Brian Webster Apollo Guide Beautifully filmed, brutally frank, and forceful in its political message - in support of active peacekeeping - this is a powerful film that's not to be missed.
