What to Know

Critics Consensus

Plunging viewers into the nightmarish hellscape of an apartment complex under siege, [Rec] proves that found footage can still be used as an effective delivery mechanism for sparse, economic horror.

Kevin Maher The Times (UK) The Spanish horror movie Rec promises, in the first act at least, to be a profoundly disturbing experience. Rated: 2/5 Sep 29, 2015 Full Review Xan Brooks Guardian Midway through, the plot blows a gasket and the camerawork turns altogether crazed, joggling us about in the semi-darkness while the soundtrack rings to distorted screams. TheMovieSearch R REC had the potential to be a standout in the found-footage horror subgenre, but unfortunately, it falls short on nearly every level. Attempting to emulate the tension and mystery of The Blair Witch Project, the film instead leans into a sloppily executed horror-murder premise that feels derivative and poorly conceived. From the very beginning, the technical execution undermines the story. The handheld camerawork is chaotic and disorienting to the point of distraction, making it difficult to follow the action. Rather than adding tension, the constant shaking and random camera angles detract from immersion, leaving viewers dizzy and frustrated. Lighting is equally problematic, often leaving key scenes too dark or inconsistently lit, further removing any sense of atmosphere. The screenplay does little to help matters. The plot lacks cohesion and motivation, and character development is virtually nonexistent. The audience is left guessing at intentions and outcomes—not in a suspenseful way, but because the story is confusing and poorly structured. Suspense should build naturally, but here it collapses under its own weight, leaving a disjointed and unsatisfying narrative. Even the horror elements themselves fail to deliver. Scares feel forced and predictable, relying heavily on sudden movements or loud noises rather than any genuine sense of dread or tension. The promise of a compelling mystery gets lost amid a jumble of incoherent scenes, leaving the film feeling more like a frustrating chore than an engaging horror experience. Overall, REC is a frustrating and poorly executed entry into the found-footage genre. While some viewers may appreciate the chaotic, fast-paced approach, it ultimately lacks the focus, craftsmanship, and storytelling needed to make it worthwhile. For those seeking effective horror, this is one to skip. It was nice seeing this type of directing. The story is great and there are definitely some scare jumps. Its a def watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/05/25 Full Review James B REC is perhaps the best zombie film I and you will ever see. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/20/25 Full Review Lloyd S Just terrible and frustrating to watch. The camera kept shaking and the people where shouting the whole movie. Well, now I know where outlast was inspired from. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/13/25 Full Review Rév O It's okay, same as cloverfield, except its zombies instead of alien monster and happens in one building instead of a city. Same thing though, although I enjoyed the other one a little more than this. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/08/25 Full Review Read all reviews
