Critics Consensus

David Goyer's Unborn is a tame genre effort with cheap thrills and scares that border on silliness.

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online I don't know why I even bothered to watch this. Rated: F Sep 12, 2017 Full Review Joshua Rothkopf Time Out Rated: 3/5 Nov 17, 2011 Full Review Cliff Doerksen Chicago Reader [An] exuberantly creepy mash-up of Jewish folklore, J-horror atmospherics, and demonic possession boilerplate. Jan 5, 2010 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Aside from some genuinely creepy imagery carbon copied from better films, Goyer’s hammy attempt to incite shocks results only in laughs, while his story structure causes eye-rolls. Rated: 1.5/4 Dec 15, 2023 Full Review Nikki Baughan Roll Credits But the film's fundamental flaw is that these solid spooky moments hang on a narrative that's not nearly strong enough to bear their weight. Rated: 3/5 Nov 4, 2019 Full Review Simon Miraudo Quickflix I truly, truly recommend watching either of those instead of The Unborn. Or your wall. Just staring at your wall is also an acceptable alternative too. Rated: 0.5/5 Oct 21, 2014 Full Review Read all reviews

Deivid F Filme bom com ótimos sustos e com personagens que a gente se importa. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/26/24 Full Review Neeraj K started with jumpscare ended on the same note Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/10/24 Full Review Bahad j The movie was a very exciting adventure from start to finish Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/14/24 Full Review Corey K Still a favorite of mine. Creepy, original, and cool effects for the time Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/12/24 Full Review Audience Member 15 years later and I actually still like this Believe it or not it's genuinely creepy with an appealing leading lady from David S. Goyer and producer Michael Bay It stays Odette Yustman playing a teenage girl named Casey Beldon She gets the feeling something is watching her from behind the shadows and in her nightmares Her friend Romi notices one of her eyes is distorted, it's actually a result of her being a twin but she finds out she had a younger brother that died in utero Casey's mother also lost her mind and killed herself She discovers this supernatural evil might've have something to do with it as she's being haunted by someone who was never even born Now this evil takes the shape of a young boy using her body as a conduit to come back to life and erase her from the picture The usual PG-13 horror stuff is expected from hallucinations to freaky images to the lead questioning their sanity When it gets to discussing the history of the holocaust it actually starts to get interesting This still has a few interesting ideas juggling demonic possession, Jewish mythology, rituals, mysticism This is was my first introduction to Odette Yustman and she does a good job next to Megan Goode It's refreshing to see Cam Gigandet play a decent guy for a change too Gary Oldman is in a serviceable role but he is one of the highlights when it comes to the exorcism portions Yes the jumps scares are typical and we've seen stuff like this before especially the investigation Yustman is the real appeal here being she has to come to terms with a horror that's plaguing not just her but her whole family lineage It's very disposable horror for sure but nothing horrendous Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/24 Full Review Mandy H I think this film was meant to be scary, but my sister and I couldn't stop laughing. We still laugh about it in 2023. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews
