Catherine Shoard Guardian Engaging, ruefully funny stuff. Rated: 3/5 Apr 16, 2010 Full Review David Parkinson Empire Magazine Despite the odd misstep, Brit filmmaker Ben Hopkins handles the satirical subject with the assurance of a veteran. Rated: 3/5 Apr 15, 2010 Full Review Leo Robson Financial Times Tayanç Ayaydin makes a winning loser as Mihram, who uses Charlie Chaplin pluck to escape a Willie Loman plot. Rated: 4/5 Apr 15, 2010 Full Review Sarah Manvel Critic's Notebook Mr. Hopkins oversimplifies his message, patronizing both his characters and his audience. This film has also been made 14 years too late. Aug 9, 2018 Full Review David Edwards Daily Mirror (UK) Subtitled and with laughs of the subtlest kind, Ben Hopkins has crafted a deliciously funny cautionary tale on the perils of greed and how globalisation can be a heartless mistress. Audience Member A road movie of sorts. The main protagonist is a drinker and a gambler, and a small time chancer. Life is hard for him and he struggles against the odds. He has an amazingly loving wife, and his heart is buried deep, but is in the right place. A realistic portrait of Eastern European society, and the criminal fringe. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A little on the quirky side, but this doesn't detract from the story which effectively portrays one man's struggle to lift himself out of the black market system he is so dependent on. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member A story that goes far beyond what it initially suggests. Explores many complex issues and the changing social and economic dynamics currently taking place in Turkey. Brilliant cast who deliver perfect performances. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Mike M Brisk, likable comedy-drama... Hopkins' thesis is that to accept globalisation - the connectedness of things - you have also to accept the tainted blood that sometimes passes through its veins. For his part, the director appears to have maintained his own independence happily enough, although the zesty comic energy of the first hour - Mihram's scenes with his better connected, more morally flexible rival Mustafa (Sahin) recall the edgy relationship between John Cusack and Dan Aykroyd's unionising hitman in "Grosse Pointe Blank" - has, by the end, turned into a glum resignation at the state of things; the thesis negotiates the film into a painted corner, and we sense weariness beginning to overtake Hopkins' usual playfulness. Still, the sudden breaks for musical numbers suggests the filmmaker hasn't entirely lost his experimental edge: as always with Hopkins, there's no telling where he's about to go next, and it's gratifying to know he's still out there.
