Liam Lacey Globe and Mail The kind of movie you have to respect for doing what it sets out to do. Rated: 2/4 Aug 28, 2009 Full Review Jason Anderson Toronto Star An appealingly rough-and-ready contemporary variation on Shaft in Africa. Rated: 3/4 Aug 28, 2009 Full Review Anton Bitel Projected Figures An uncategorisable exploration of the contradictions to be found in Franco-African identity... where a whole history of crime, poverty and colonial exploitation are portrayed through mythology as a clash of the totems. Audience Member A mindlessly fun French heist film that isn't directed by Luc Besson! It accomplishes it's minimal tasks with verve. As a Blaxploitation revivalist movie, it's like Shaft set in contemporary Africa. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Bringing classic Shaftlike attributes to Franco-African film. With characters you can love to hate, action galore and even a little voodoo hoodoo thrown in, Black touches many levels and does so quite well. The biggest problem is in Anton Yakovlev as the extremely over the top mercenary. His facial expressions and dialogue are just so comedic that it takes the wind right out of the sails of an otherwise pretty straight forward film. Had Black plaid more to the comedic side, his character would have fit in nicely but Black is not at all a comedy. In fact, most of the moments that might get a laugh are clearly not intended that way and the very few times the film does go for a joke, it could also be taken somewhat seriously. I like Black because it manages to accomplish what it set out to do really well. Not your big budget Hollywood film, it brings action to the forfront and hammers it home despite a laughable main antagonist. Long live Mc Jean Gab 1! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member This was so fucking strange. A realistic and reasonably gripping bank heist film turns into a supernatural kung-fu porno!? Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
