Loren King Boston Globe A darkly funny and fascinating examination of body image, sexuality, and self-esteem. Rated: 3.5/4 Sep 1, 2010 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times An exemplar of fresh-air filmmaking that addresses the devastating legacy of the drug thalidomide with acidic wit and grumpy honesty. Rated: 3/4 Apr 16, 2010 Full Review V.A. Musetto New York Post The film tastefully handles the sensitive subject, but it lacks the bite that a Michael Moore would have provided. Audience Member Frank emotional exploration of living with a disability. Interviews by and of middle-aged Germans with shortened limbs; a side-effect of their mothers being given thalidomide during pregnancy. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member I LOVED this documentary. I suppose as a "disabled" person myself, it hit me in a way that most people cannot recognize. But I loved how one woman was worried about her stomach when appearing naked, not her legs or her arms. And I loved how another woman when confronted with her picture commented on how old she looked. I guess I agree with the director's premise that the more people who are exposed to disability the more comfortable they are with people who are disabled. However, these were NAKED disabled people....which complicates the situation somewhat. It was interesting that the actor, Matt Fraser commented that those disabled due to thalidomide were lucky, because they never asked God, "Why me?" I suppose I have asked that. But then on the other hand, I totally understood them when they said that they would not be different if that option were offered. I suppose that sounds odd, but it is not PC, it is simply the truth. Phenomenal movie. I wish I had half of Kim Morton's gumption and half of Mat Fraser's self confidence. And half the courage of all of the participants. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member A super interesting look at thalidomiders and body image.
