Louise Sweet Sight & Sound The confusions and obscurities of the central debate are the more unfortunate, since Susan Sontag elsewhere shows an effective metaphorical grasp of how communities under such pressures are sustained and reconstructed. Jan 28, 2020 Full Review Keith Uhlich Time Out Sontag's true talent was for the printed word; behind the camera, her limitations come more harshly to light. Rated: 2/5 Nov 17, 2011 Full Review Michael Atkinson Village Voice The movie does not advertise its alliances, and Sontag's position is pretty thoroughly hidden in the folds of her imagery. Feb 2, 2010 Full Review John Simon Esquire Magazine Not only does the film have a fine eye for visual detail, it also breaks new ground by allowing two main speakers to carry on an antiphonal debate that weaves its way through the entire fabric. Jul 28, 2020 Full Review Sarah Boslaugh Playback:stl ...a reminder of a time when a noted writer and intellectual was willing to take the risk of working in a medium in which she had no training and minimal experience... Rated: 6/10 Jul 8, 2011 Full Review Chris Barsanti Filmcritic.com ...Sontag was enough of an artist to know that she was present in a crucible-moment, and that if she just pointed her camera in the right direction, history would do the rest. Audience Member a nice slice of cinema verite from Sontag, shot in the aftermath of war and full of the weariness and futility of war. Overly academic voice-overs offer more equanimity than you'd expect and a lot of historical perspective. it is all a bit crude in construction and concludes on a dull note as doctors work to cure shell shock with trances and torment, still you have to credit Sontag for ending on the only real suffering we get to watch.
