      Critics Consensus

With plot points Stolen from countless superior films, this would-be thriller squanders a solid cast on overly serious and suspense-free storytelling.

Megan e This had promise but ultimately the execution failed. The plot was clunky going back and forth between the two time periods. And the lingering shots wasted screen time rather than portraying emotion. Not worth it. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/20/23 Full Review S L I don't understand why this has a zero rating as I didn't think it was that bad. I've certainly seen much, much worse that had higher critic ratings than this. I guess I'll never understand the critics. Maybe they're just looking for perfection but that's almost subjective I think. I didn't see an issue with the story switching between time periods (as one critic mentioned), but I'm not going back to look either. It was suspenseful enough. I wasn't on the edge of my seat but it kept me wondering. Some parts of the story could've been a little smoother. There were a couple issues but overall I thought it was a decent Saturday afternoon or late night movie that certainly doesn't rate a zero in my book. Joe Williams St. Louis Post-Dispatch This gravely serious drama is as insular as a tomb with Muzak. Rated: 2/4 Apr 1, 2010 Full Review Mark Olsen Los Angeles Times A leaden murder mystery with a clunky structure that swings back and forth between 1958 and 2008, Stolen wastes the talents of a reasonably good cast. Rated: 2.5/5 Mar 18, 2010 Full Review Rex Reed Observer Not a masterpiece, perhaps, but technically polished, with inspired performances and enough suspense that by the time Mr. Hamm found the redemption that freed him from his own demons, I was so wired I needed a Valium. Rated: 2/4 Mar 17, 2010 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review This thriller, if that’s what it’s supposed to be, never comes close to reaching a boiling point, neither dramatically nor in terms of suspense. Rated: 1/4 Aug 22, 2023 Full Review Christopher Long Movie Metropolis Unvarying in tone and style, it's a rough slog. Rated: 3/10 Jun 22, 2010 Full Review Annlee Ellingson Moving Pictures Magazine Hamm's and Lucas' performances are fine, but first-time director Anders Anderson is heavy-handed and overwrought, portraying emotional turmoil with clichs.
