Jamie Righetti indieWire The story might be familiar, but watching The Grinch tiptoe around to "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" always brings a surge of fuzzy nostalgia every Christmas season that never seems to get old. Nov 30, 2018 Full Review AV Club Staff AV Club The special works because of its surprisingly sentimental climax, one that comes by its emotion honestly, as the Grinch realizes the Christmas spirit is indomitable, no matter what he does to stop it. Nov 21, 2018 Full Review TIME Magazine This lusty, garishly colored, good-hearted cartoon was a wonderful, awful idea. Aug 31, 2008 Full Review Laura Bradley The Daily Beast Simply put, a life without this holiday classic would’ve stink, stank, stunk. Matthew D A devilishly delightful animated film! How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966) is a brisk and concise animated holiday heist like no other you have ever seen. Chuck Jones directed this little special with a clear and quick mind for effect edits and funny shots. His framing of The Grinch's ghoulish face is so hilarious just as his humor with Max the dog quite silly. I miss hand drawn animation like this dearly. The story is a nice parable for appreciating the finer things during Christmas time such as spending time with others and well wishing for the world at large. While The Grinch's own dejected and forlorn presence is charming is its own way, his change of heart into Whoville's holiday season hero. Boris Karloff narrates the story with a whimsical sense of sarcasm and wonder. His deep booming voice echoes effortless from the speakers. He really adds a certain pop to the sound of this animated special. His vocal talents also extend to The Grinch's own sinister snarl. He gave a fantastic voice acting performance here. Lastly, the music is as inspired as the story. Albert Hague's score is rising and iconic. He adds a warmth to each scene with his perfectly cued score to each action on screen. Similarly, the repeated theme song of "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" is sung beautifully by Thurl Ravenscroft. Ravenscroft's deep vocal tone fits the tune's mischievous mood and cabaret genre. It is as memorable of a song as the special itself. I recommend How the Grinch Stole Christmas for every Christmas season with your family! It never gets old.
