Audience Member Dutch mercenary Sergeant De Koning (Everett McGill) has been left alone in Korea after his platoon, who have been committing numerous war crimes, are attacked. Then the Korean girl he'd pushed into prostitution ends up becoming more important to him and he tries to help her little brother alive. De Koning also makes the journey from the kind of soldier who would get everyone drunk on the front lines — leading to that deadly attack by the Red Chinese — to some level of redemption. Directed by Hans Scheepmaker and Dae-hie Kim, who co-wrote the script with Henk Bos, Field of Honor was delayed in its native Netherlands for more than a year because of the bad reception it got at the Cannes Film Festival. It's not as horrible as reviews at the time suggest, but in no way as good as other similar war films of the 80s like Platoon. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member FIELD OF HONOR One of only a small number of films about the Korean War (1950-1953). This is a very good one. Well-acted. A compelling story that is based upon the first-hand knowledge of screenwriter Henk Bos. A Dutch infantry battalion serving with a contingent of United Nations troops is all but wiped out during a full-scale attack by the Chinese on a small rural village where they have been posted. A lone, surviving Dutch officer named Sire, war-weary and seriously wounded, must now care for and protect on his own two village children who also somehow survived the assault in which their mother was brutally murdered. It is a daunting task and the odds are bleak that any one of them will live to tell the dire tale. Resources are slim to nonexistent. The three have been cut off from friendly forces and enemy soldiers are quickly advancing into the area to take up forward positions. But Sire refuses to desert his two young, innocent charges and does the best that he can to keep them all alive through the thick of it to come. Contains disturbing scenes of violence in combat on soldiers and civilians. Filmed near the demilitarized zone between North Korea and the Republic of South Korea in rough, steep mountainous terrain.
