Clyde Gilmour Maclean's Magazine Rosalind Russell strenuously overacts in the central role of a backstage mama whose tenacity is tigerish. Joel H Perhaps if I had known the plot of Gypsy before I watched it, I would have liked it more. I kept waiting for the story to shift from Rose, the overbearing theater mom, to her timid daughter Louise, and it never did. I found Rose's character to be grating, which is kind of the point, it seems. I also didn't like where Louise ended up. The third act is rushed, and the ending feels like a song that stops before the music is over. Speaking of music, while some tunes sounded vaguely familiar, I didn't hear any of what I would consider to be popular standards. I think I'll just move on from watching Gypsy. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/03/23 Full Review Liam D An entertaining if slightly long musical that has the right elements but in a okay movie Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/05/22 Full Review Audience Member Roz steals the show and wins her 5th and final Golden Globe. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member I love this movie. I used to watch it over and over as a kid Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review steve d The only thing that worked for me was Wood. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review deke p Never saw it until late nite tv 12.10.19. I had no idea: that these great songs were in it. & That Rosalind Russell looked so good, even in a striptease bikini. And she must have been 55 years old then, as i think she was born in 1907 and the movie was 1962. I give it 4 stars, maybe deserve more, if only for the songs. I can't believe the poor reviews.
