It's ok. The train sequence at the end is great and should've been the opening scene. It's pretty badass and great stunts. Nothing is broken about it and it does make pretty basic sense. Everything is ok about it, but it nothing spectacular. The biggest problem is it really is never able to tie the bounty hunts he goes on with the personal drama with his wife, the baby on the way, and the person hunting him. It feels completely sporadic and never ties well together at all. If you take out the hunts, nothing really changes honestly. This is trying to go for a like a Midnight Run comedy/Hard 70's crime thriller vibe and it can't really make it work in a cohesive way. Part of that is because the direction isn't anything special half the time especially the comedic scenes which aren't shot that particulary well to get a laugh. It all feels pretty flat. The music also suprisingly is hardly used and makes it feel very dry at certain points. I think it takes like 20 minutes before we even get a track. It would've helped with the tone issue this has also. When it does play it's very boring and forgettable. McQueen himself in this is alright. Half the time it feels like he's phoning it in and not trying or I can't tell if he is and the script isn't giving him much to work with, or if he's not that good of a comedic actor. (Maybe a little of all the above) It feels like any big name from this time could've played the part and nothing would really change. It's just a very unremarkable performance overall. I'd say skip this unless your a die hard McQueen fan and wanna see his last film. The stunts at the end are pretty cool to see him doing quite a bit. But besides that there isn't much here.

I`ve seen The Hunter several times over the years and I think its a great movie, even if critics or many viewers do not think so.
I always loved the raw balance of comedy and action, moving at the end slowly into drama.
If someone wants to see an entertaining movie with a lot of humour, action and likable characters...this one from 1980 is a good choice :)

Overall, I was quite surprised by how much fun I had with Steve McQueen's last feature film. It's filled with great stunts, fun action scenes, and comedic moments, which were surprising and witty given the actors' work in previous films. Watching an old school bounty hunter track down various criminals is rather entertaining, and Steve McQueen's character drives rather poorly, adding to the film's excitement. Sadly, the film feels slightly cramped, including a side plot about the lead coming to grips with fatherhood, which slows the pacing. Nevertheless, there are plenty of entertaining moments in Steve McQueen's last film, and it's wildly memorable.

This movie is sad to say was Steve McQueen last film where he plays a bounty hunter afraid of commitment.

Steve McQueen plays real-life bounty hunter Ralph "Papa" Thorson in this disappointedly routine action film, which would sadly be his final film. "The Hunter" is a mostly episodic story, with McQueen tasked with hunting down different cons who've jumped bail, which leads to fist fights, car chases, and one particularly enjoyable chase atop a commuter train. There's also a quaint scene where he uses an early incarnation of a taser. Journeyman director Buzz Kulik ("Villa Rides," "Sergeant Ryker," "Brian's Song") delivers adequate action sequences, but lacks the style of Sam Peckinpah's "The Getaway" or Peter Yates' "Bullitt." A stronger director could have elevated this material, but there's no denying that McQueen is one of the coolest actors of all-time and does turn this completely average material into something much more compelling than it deserved. With a lesser actor playing Papa Thorson, "The Hunter" would have long been forgotten, but McQueen makes this film something worth watching. Eli Wallach, Kathryn Harrold, LeVar Burton, Ben Johnson, and Tracey Walter also appear in the film. RELATED RECOMMENDATION: If you want a higher quality movie about modern day bounty hunters, watch Robert DeNiro in "Midnight Run" instead.
