Gary Arnold Washington Post Apart from Assante and the random effective bit player -- notably Frederick Downs, a Veterans Administration official who plays the first murder victim, Jack Williams -- the level of acting tends to be perilously amateurish. Sep 23, 2015 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times I, the Jury is a violent private eye thriller, with a certain redeeming sense of style. Rated: 3/4 Aug 17, 2015 Full Review Variety Staff Variety The souped-up remake is hard as nails, with Armand Assante plausibly macho and ruggedly sexy as the amoral private eye who avenges the murder of his old Vietnam war buddy. Mar 26, 2009 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com …this is 1982 Mike Hammer, jacked up on steroids rather than 1947 vintage flavour, but it’s still Hammer done right, hard-punching, hard-talking, hard to kill and easy to like if you can take it. Rated: 3/5 Jun 22, 2024 Full Review TV Guide With the exception of Robert Aldrich's Kiss Me Deadly, all Hammer films have been disappointments. This version of I, the Jury is no exception. acsdoug D The movie has areal cheap feel to it. If it wasn't for all the boobs I would have guessed it was a TV movie. Earns a recommendation for no other reason than the opportunity to see a naked Barbara Carrera. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/31/24 Full Review Audience Member This is the remake of the 1953 film of the same name. It's changed to a modern setting of the early 80s at the time and is much more violent and sexier than the original. Mike Hammer is played this time around by Armand Assente. He fits nicely in the role. What took place in the original happens here as well with a few changes. Hammer's war buddy from Vietnam one-armed Jack (who is also a detective) gets shot by a mysterious assassin. Hammer's investigation to his friend's murder leads him to a sex clinic, Hollywood FX Studios, CIA bullies, mobsters and a serial rapist. All in a days work for the Hammer! This remake takes a LOT of liberties with it's source material. So much so that it almost out does the original. What I didn't like about the 1953 version was it's far fetched story cupped with bad acting. It's the same thing here except I am willing to forgive this version more. Reasons for this is because it's so much more trashier and adult than the original that it becomes fun and entertaining at times. Take the Orgy scene at the sex clinic Mike is investigating. It's a very disturbing scene with him in one room watching a bunch of people have sex while in another room the serial rapist is slicing and dicing twin sisters on a waterbed. It was very creepy and provided a more hard edged tone to the case Mike is trying to solve. Not to mention the infamous Japanese Grill scene that almost got me jumping out of my seat. Scenes like this come out of left field when you least expect it and I thoroughly enjoyed that. Of course the serial rapist subplot isn't exactly the case, but more of a distraction while leading Mike to the real killer. This is meant to be film noir-ish after all. Just like the original. If you've seen the original then you know who the killer will be, but if it's your first watching this version instead then I envy you. Because I wish I had seen this version first instead. I probably would've been more shocked by it and would've rated this movie a little bit more higher. In any case, this is a well done remake that might surprise you if you can get past it's cheesey first few minutes. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A terrific piece of sleaze. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Detective Mike Hammer investigates the murder of an old Vietnam buddy. As you might expect, Hammer solves the case but not before quite a bit of blood spills. Bill Conti provides good music for the opening and closing credits.
