Audience Member Indiscreet is a lighthearted romantic comedy. Jim has been cheating on Gerry, so she breaks up with him. Some time later, Gerry has met and fallen in love with Tony. Meanwhile, Gerry's sister has been going to school in Europe. She comes back and announces her engagement to Jim, who was also in Europe. Now Gerry has to find a way to break them up. It's a good movie. It really showcases Gloria Swanson's talent for acting, singing, comedy, and drama. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member it slightly feels like pride and prejudice :) Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member good pre code comedy Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member On New Year's Eve, Geraldine (Gloria Swanson) decides it's best to break off her engagement with her boyfriend Jim Woodward (Monroe Owsley) because she has grown tired of his dishonesty and just want's something better. Soon after she meets Tony Blake (Ben Lyon) a novelist who treats her far better and they begin to fall in love with each other. All is well until Geraldine's sister Joan (Barbara Kent) returns home introducing her new boyfriend, which happens to be Jim. Indiscreet is an early "talkie" by Leo McCarey exploring the relationships people have with each other and how they can be fragile and begin and end with chance. This is personified in a wonderful scene in the film between Geraldine and Tony where they discuss how this notion of their only being one person in the world for everyone as essentially bullshit. Tony understands that there is an element of chance with any relationship and he wants to make the most of his with Geraldine, regardless of her recent relationship with Jim. Leo McCarthy infuses this film with a nice balance of comedy and drama to creating a nice little film essentially about companionship. Gloria Swanson is charming and has a few great scenes of physical humor, reminding me of Chaplin at points, particularly in a scene where she is trying to get past the ticket taker on a boat. She tries various comedic ways to no avail and it's a fun memorable sequence. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member The title alone lets you know it had to be made in the 20th century. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Tiresome screwball comedy further undermined by the usual hiccups exemplified by movies still trying to find their way with talkie technology. Geraldine Trent (Gloria Swanson, whose confident performance is the only thing elevating the tolerability of this dreck) stars a relationship with self-help author Tony Blake (Ben Lyon). However, her past romantic "indiscretions" with a playboy (Monroe Owsley) destabilize her fresh start. Further wacky complications ensue when said playboy becomes engaged to Geraldine's naive sister (Barbara Kent). "Indiscreet" is seriously a checklist of everything wrong with films made as the silent era was coming to a close and talkies became the norm: Random, ill-conceived musical moments; hammy, over-the-top acting; and bad combinations of drama and comedy.
