Lawrence O'Toole Entertainment Weekly Whale’s playful and innovative trick photography (using wires and mattes that have now become standard issues) and Rains’ virtuoso performance, nearly entirely vocal, turn his tragedy of transparency into something touching and timeless. Rated: A Oct 15, 2025 Full Review Times (UK) Staff The Times (UK) Mr. Wells's original idea had the element of humour as well as stark terror in it; in the film the humour misses all its glorious opportunities and the terror is robbed. Oct 8, 2020 Full Review SMH Staff Sydney Morning Herald Under the supervision of James Whale, the director of "Frankenstein" and "The Old Dark House" the doings of the Invisible Man have been set forth with extraordinary realism. Wells chestnut. Chris C Given how old this movie is, quite good. and so interesting to see how things have progressed over the years! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/24/25 Full Review Tyler S Very solid. Fascinating production for its time. Other than that, simple movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/31/25 Full Review Kepler M. For being such a short movie, it can drag in some parts. But it is still a great movie and a classic for monster movies Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/20/25 Full Review Jurassic P I went into this movie expecting horror and I came out laughing harder then I ever laughed before. It definitely won't be anything you expect, but it will also be greater then anything you expected. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/16/25 Full Review Kevin P Arguably the funniest of the classic Universal Monster Movies. Great concept that everyone's always imagined what you could do with the power of invisibility. The practical effects for the invisibility scenes are incredibly impressive for the time period and hold up very well to this day. We get some terrific voice acting from the titular Invisible Man. He sounds like he's having so much fun being affably evil (reminds me of Mark Hamill's voice acting for the Joker). It’s genuinely really funny watching the Invisible Man screw around and just mess with everyone, all while the tension subtly rises as his antics escalate him from a prankster to a serial killer. His reaction to coping with invisibility starts off as almost relatable, but he soon goes mad with power when he realizes all the possibilities he can now get away with. The hysterical crying fiancé cliche is a tad goofy at first, but the actress still tries, and she still humanizes the titular villain as she's the only one he'll act normal to. The bar maiden starts off very funny, but she becomes annoying after the first bar brawl and just resorts to screaming like a banshee for the rest of the film. The main conflict is very engaging, as the Invisible Man's goal gradually shifts from trying to become visible again to just holding the world hostage and taking his powers for a joyride. All the scenes where the Invisible Man maneuvers the angry mobs and they try their best to fight & capture him are very creative and entertaining. The radio hijacking scene was very funny and had me off guard. The plot thickens when the Invisible Man blackmails old colleague into becoming his accomplice. Though it's hilarious to think that he committed this terror while butt naked in the English winter. The climax was very creative, as the police try to hold hands to make a human barrier perimeter around the house to capture the invisible man while he zig zags to break their formation and cause panic. Then the Invisible Man goes nuts and causes a train to crash and steals money from a bank. He actually has the highest body count of any of the classic universal monsters despite being just being a normal human with invisibility. "I hope your car's insured, Kent" had me in stitches. Eventually the police upgrade their clever tactics, such as safety nets and finally get him good John Wilkes Boothe style after they catch him resting in a barn and smoke him out to reveal his location with footsteps in the snow. The final reveal of what he looks like in the hospital bed was a great cherry on top to finish this off. It's not exactly scary, but the movie is still VERY entertaining, and the stakes are still very high with the titular villain's impressive winning streak against everyone. He goes back and forth between being funny and threatening. It's a pleasant surprise with how well this movie holds up, and I definitely recommend it for the Halloween season! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/16/25 Full Review Kalissa H I really like this movie. Stands up during a rewatch too. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/10/25 Full Review Read all reviews
