Nell Minow Common Sense Media Dated classic has colonial racial views. Rated: 3/5 Dec 24, 2010 Full Review Steven D. Greydanus Decent Films Doesn't quite fulfill its promise, in part because the title destination is too obviously a MacGuffin in which the film ultimately doesn't even feign mild interest. Bonnie L I love Africa and this movie is a treasure of scenery and wildlife and jungle culture. The adventure story and acting is very engaging. It kept my interest throughout. I was going to watch and then delete it from my dvr, but this a keeper. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/07/24 Full Review CodyZamboni Old school adventure, that should've been alot better. What I did like, was the stunning on location photography, and a clear sense of how long and arduous the journey is for Quartermain and Elizabeth. But there is no sense of danger or menace. The stars only provide lame reaction shots to second unit or grainy stock footage of wild creatures. Over and over again. And I was underwhelmed by the climax. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/26/23 Full Review David F Filmed in Africa, this movie does capture some of the exotic adventure charms of the book, to which it is not very faithful otherwise. Also, Stewart Grangers' Allan Quatermain somehow manages to be even more of a bitter, cynical hunting professional with unplumbed depths than the narrator of the book was, which I liked. It's Hollywood, so of course there is a love story displacing some of the more adventurey content. It's an earnest, partly successful adaptation. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/22/23 Full Review Bill B An old-fashioned adventure film, probably not to the taste of those more accustomed to CGI and high-tech graphics. Set back in a time when there were still pockets of the unknown scattered about the globe. Enjoyable. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Take it for what it is - a fantastic adventure film; silly to condemn it for not being 2020 'woke.' The best of all the film versions of this tale. Filmed on location, wonderful imagery showcasing the magnificence of Africa, amazing animal footage and dramatic encounters, a different (and respectful) look at the various tribes (e.g. the Watutsi) than typically seen in period films. This wonderful Saturday matinee movie inspired later films like Indiana Jones. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review steve d Forgettable action film.
