nick s This is a very stagey production. The acting would have been okay for a play, but not up to scratch for a movie. It just felt like they didn't put in the time. The gags were superficial and the special effects weak. I think people are sentimental about this because it was the first film adaption. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/05/23 Full Review JJJJJJ J This film did a really good job of walking the horror/comedy line. Corman always does a good job of acknowledging the fact that his movies are B-movies and never tries to be more than they are. I really enjoyed this movie though I think from a social critique standpoint this film does not meet Corman's first attempt in Bucket of Blood. Good but not great. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/01/23 Full Review Red T One of the weirdest, quirkiest, bizarre things I've seen in a while. The most bizarre part is this is actually a solidly edited and paced film which is the bedrock. This merges for the most part dark comedy and horror with a bizarre plot pretty well and moves at a super quick pace. Everything else is also half decent. The music is very quirky also but isn't used much and only really has one track throughout. The cinemaography isn't bad either. This is very coarse and rough to watch on top of having a cheap low budget feel throughout which works overall. There are some very dark and even though its done in a comedic way, distrubing scenes which I can't believe were made in 1960. The humor also works suprisingly well throughout as well. The only issue is that some elements feel very hammed in and like the romance with Audrey, pretending to be a dentist, and sometimes this is a bit too quirky for its own good. That really is what holds this back while also being its greatest strength. If it took itself a bit more serious at times instead of always alternating between comedy/quirk horror, it would have helped flesh things out and not feel as cheap a knock off plot as it is. It just needed a bit more devlopment overall, reflected in the super short runtime. Anyone who is a fan of Roger Corman, Vintage Horror, or wants to see Jack Nicholson in a super early role should check this out. It's amazing too see even back than Jack was well....Jack. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/14/23 Full Review Teddy B A surprisingly witty and funny film that manages to survive the wave of cheesy 50's and 60's B-Movie schlock to reach a bar of actual enjoyability and engagement. The story is charming to a tee (and was probably one of the best horror films to make into a musical, which is obviously better and more fully realized) and the acting is very quaint but is delivered with good comedic timing. It also makes good use of its very low budget (a Roger Corman specialty). I recommend this film to those who want to see something more offbeat and charming in a horror film from around this time. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/27/23 Full Review Steve D A mess but at least it lead to the musical.
