Alec B Opera is weird when filmed as a proper movie but Zefferelli finds a lot of beautiful and strangely intimate moments in his direction. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/24 Full Review Audience Member A very faithful adaptation of Verdi's opera (though critised for leaving out the Willow Song). If you enjoy the original piece you're bound to enjoy this. Personally I found it a lite tiring, but I guess I'm just not an opera person. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Outstanding film version of Verdi's great opera. May be the finest filmed opera ever. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member very classic.....pretty intense characters....Iago will keep you going.. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member beautifully filmed-mesmorizing and moving.A great film even if you dont like opera it will move you to tears Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Operas are always difficult to put to film. What works dramatically in the sphere of music - the sphere of motifs, moods, and shades - is often difficult to visually depict onscreen. Franco Zeffirelli, a filmmaker who has devoted nearly his entire career to putting operas and Shakespearean dramas on the silver screen, is obviously one of the fittest individuals to approach Verdi's mature, pseudo-Wagnerian, Bard-inspired opera. Placido Domingo, a denizen of the role of the Moor of Venice on international stages, never possessed the fire of Jon Vickers in the central role; nonetheless, his characterization is powerful and beautiful. Katia Ricciarelli is vocally crystalline, but her voice is predominantly weak; Mirella Freni was the best modern Desdemona. Justino Diaz is visually appropriate for the role of Jago, but a more serpentine voice would have been preferable; Piero Cappuccilli, Peter Glossop, Robert Merrill, or Thomas Stewart would all have been more successful. Essentially, this is a well-crafted but rather predictable film of Verdi's most dramatically fiery opera filled with aesthetically pleasing, but not altogether exciting, voices. It would be, in short, an excellent film for those who teeter curiously around the world of opera and are eager to take a workaday plunge into one of its central pillars.
