Peter Travers Gannett Westchester Rockland Newspapers Frankenheimer even makes moral noises about what industrial pollution is doing to our lives. But Prophecy's moral aspirations turn out to be mere window dressing for an old-fashioned and not very convincing monster movie. John C When the credits rolled at the end of 'Prophecy' I literally had to think to myself what exactly I'd just watched. I know I've sat through numerous horror films over the years, but even the worst stayed in my head while I was reading who was in it. And, weirdly, 'Prophecy' wasn't that bad. Trying my best to recall what I'd just witnessed, it's about a doctor and his wife who head out into the wilderness to - er - help something (or someone - like I say, details are already sketchy). There, they come up against angry Native Americans, shady businessmen and - of course - monsters. Yeah, so that's about all I can remember. It's certainly not the worst horror film I've ever seen and the monster effects are passable. They're practically (naturally, for the era/budget) and if you feel the need to see another rubbery creature then you'll find a few here - although they mainly come at the end. Yes, the end. It was the best part - I'm not just saying that to be deliberately harsh, but at least the final act moved a bit quicker than the rest. As I say, this isn't the worst horror film I've ever see and I believe - from what I've read online - it does have a reasonable 'cult following.' I guess it just didn't gel with me like other similar offerings. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/01/25 Full Review Sebastian L A true hidden gem that for some reason is extremely underrated. Superbly written and wonderfully executed in general, albeit with some dodgy effects here and there. Don't believe the hate - this one deserves a better reputation. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/24/24 Full Review Valerii Ege D The movie has too many stationary scenes. Monstrosity scenes are well crafted. Some scenes are technically amazing. But slow-burn parts killing the vibe. Could have been much much better. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/23/23 Full Review Steve D Some good ideas that deteriorate into a dumb monster film. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/15/23 Full Review Rachel R An eco-terror mutant creature feature!? Ummm...yes, please! Plus, there are (a few) moments in this so good I was shocked. You'll know 'em when you see 'em. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/26/22 Full Review alvin a I liked it back in the 70's and to be fair I liked the cast more than most of the movie. But for a smart movie to succeed. you need to have the auidience caring about the characters. Still. as a very. very hippie type, the social messages, the cool Native Americans and the ecological horror let me feel I got what I was looking for in this kind of movie. Always was a big fan of Robery Foxworth and the rest of the cast were very good. They could have built the monster up.a lot more and gone for a.bigget climax and more effects. The bear mutant in it's big appearance did look.very much a big robot.on.a cart. I might still kick back some Nighy with.popcorn and friends enjoy joking with the movie. C'mon---at least respect the bear(s). I felt sorry for the baby beat until it started biting. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
