Paul Attanasio Washington Post An adaptation of the novel by W. Somerset Maugham, this longtime pet project of Murray's will only disappoint his many fans. Jan 4, 2018 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times The Razor's Edge is far from being a bad movie. Some of the scenes are very good, especially the uncle's deathbed farewell and Murray's first attempts to sober up Russell. But at the end I didn't feel engaged. Hernan M I love this movie; this is the original Eat Pray love story but from a man's perspective. I would even say they copied the plot of this movie (not the original novel by W. Somerset Maugham) for the book Eat Pray Love. But this movie, in 4 acts, takes on tragedy(WW1), Indulgence (Paris), spirituality (with monks in the Himalayas), love or the loss of love (Sophie) in Paris, but also compassion for a dying old man. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/01/24 Full Review Blackhawk W I love The Razor's Edge. It's a story about a search for 'the meaning of life.' Which is a question we all have at certain points in our life. I am sure this is what inspired Bill Murray to make this movie happen, to help write the script and to star in it. He too was searching for the meaning of life. I am sure the loss of his friend John Belushi influenced his passion for this project. Especially when he used the same words in the movie that he did at John Belushi's funeral. It is the first instance of seeing one of the greatest comedians ever, do an honest straight role... well almost. It is much like finding out that Eddie Murphy was also a great actor and not just a comedian. The movie also reminds you the question we all ask... What would my life had been like if I went in a different direction? What if I'd married a different person? What if I had chosen a different occupation for my life? The pain and the suffering and the heartache we all go through just living life. Some of the lines in the movie or deceiving. "You just don't get it." "There is no payoff." The answer is... even in the movie...The payoff is having the opportunity to live this life. The movie is a great experience especially when your melancholy... to realize how lucky we all are. He's traveled the whole world looking for the meaning of life. The final words are. "I'm going home." "Where's home?" "America!" Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/05/24 Full Review nick s A big effort was put into this movie, with great set pieces and costumes. The acting was competent. But for some reason I wasn't convinced and really couldn't get invested in the story. Perhaps it's because Bill Murray's dry and bullish sense of humour is all a bit too familiar? So somebody watching the film 20 years from now who has never heard of or seen Bill Murray might think it's awesomely fresh. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/25/24 Full Review John H Bill Murray tried to capture the spirit of the novel but came across as Bill Murray trying to hard Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/24 Full Review Marcus T I liked this better the first time I saw it. While overall they did a pretty good job following the story from the novel, I think Bill Murray was miscast in the lead role. He does too much of his clowning around to be true to the character in the novel, who developed some gravitas from his search. The spiritual search, which was the main point in the book, is given superficial short shrift in this production. They move his spiritual apprenticeship from India to Tibet and from Vedanta to Buddhism. That was one of the weakest parts in this adaptation. It's worth a look, but keep your expectations low. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/20/23 Full Review Stephen Jules R great story....good sentiments...wonder what if Ramis or Reitman or someone who understood Murray better had also directed it....
