Nell Minow Movie Mom Positively one of the worst movies ever made, though Stowe is, as always, luminously lovely. Rated: 0/5 Jun 19, 2003 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times It combines the slick, high-tension filmmaking fashion of today with the values and sexual stereotyping of yesterday. It's such a good job of salesmanship that you have to stop and remind yourself you don't want any. Rated: 2.5/4 Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Terry Francis Southern Voice (Atlanta) Because the film is so ludicrously bad -- the writing, photography and acting all superbly overblown -- Revenge is enjoyable in a heated-up, sick kind of way. It's self-satire without meaning to be. Rated: 1/4 May 9, 2023 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Revenge is very bad, but in-between kicks and hemorrhages, there is an involuntary sense of community. Cork B I generally enjoy Costner films - even the panned ones. But this is a bridge too far. The plot seems lifted from soap opera and makes zero sense. Why is he friends with a really old crime boss? Why is he waving his hot young wife in his face? Why don't they just leave Costner in the burning cabin? Why does Ferrar help him instead of focusing on revenge himself? Isn't Costner the bad guy here for stealing Quinn's wife? Why does Quinn wear the Navy jacket at the end after all that happened? Why was it relevant that Costner was IN the Navy? All those intro scenes seem wasted. What was up with the blonde in the bar and the Texan with the horse? There are a bunch of other logic and motivation issues, but you get the idea. OTOH, the film looks pretty good in that stylish 90s way, Costner is charismatic, and it pushes all the right emotional hot buttons. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/05/25 Full Review James B Tony Scott’s Revenge, starring Kevin Costner and Anthony Quinn, plays like an Eagles song—specifically Lyin’ Eyes—if it had taken a much darker turn. It’s a story of passion, betrayal, and the violent price of forbidden love, all wrapped in the atmosphere of a modern western. This is not an easy film to watch, and I can see why some people might be put off by its relentless darkness. Madeleine Stowe, luminous and impossibly beautiful, becomes the center of a destructive storm, and watching her character endure brutality is deeply unsettling. Yet the film’s willingness to go there is also what makes it linger in the mind. Scott’s direction is sharp and stylish, as always, but here it’s stripped of gloss, leaning instead into heat, dust, and sweat. The Mexican landscapes provide both beauty and menace, a backdrop where morality dissolves under the weight of desire and revenge. Costner brings his quiet intensity, while Quinn commands the screen as a figure both regal and terrifying. This is a film best understood not as a typical Hollywood romance or thriller, but as a modern western—one where passion is a fatal flaw and justice comes drenched in blood. Look at Revenge with new eyes, and you’ll find a haunting, underrated entry in Tony Scott’s career: grim, uncompromising, but unforgettable. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/09/25 Full Review Gesele M Im fighting to get through to the end. Big Kosner fan, but this is terrible! The dog is the only one in this film with any sense! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/20/25 Full Review D G OMG, lousy as heck. Boring, slow. Quinn has some good moments. I can't believe I did not turn it off. Some reviewers here contend the second half is way better, but it too is horrid. I must admite the last scene is touching. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/08/25 Full Review Tom B It's not great, but anything with Kevin Costner in it is worth watching. The second half is much better than the first half, if you are patient enough to sit through the first half. Miguel Ferrer is really good in this movie. It's too bad he doesn't appear until the second half. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/25/24 Full Review Jelisije J This is hands down the worst Kevin Costner film. A former pilot vacations with his friend who is a criminal cartel or mafia boss and he decides to sleep with his friend wife........predictable overly long and a complete waste of everyone talent throughout this movie run time.
