Kathleen Carroll New York Daily News Although there is no question that this free-swinging spoof... runs out of steam, it is a wonderfully flaky example of what Hollywood has to offer in this traditionally silly summer season. Rated: 3/4 Apr 20, 2021 Full Review Tom Setzer Fort Worth Star-Telegram/DFW.com If you're in the mood for some frequently inspired silliness (and have been weakened by the heat) you'll no doubt find something to laugh at in this movie. Rated: 2/4 Apr 20, 2021 Full Review Kevin Thomas Los Angeles Times The result is a non-stop barrage of gags, many of them inspired and hilarious themselves but scattershot in effect because the premise isn't sturdy or coherent enough to hold them together. Apr 20, 2021 Full Review Noah Gittell Washington City Paper Kilmer never breaks... it’s a work of near-sorcery, anchoring an actually serious movie that the filmmakers smother with jokes until it becomes a completely different thing. Apr 10, 2025 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com …Val Kilmer’s cinematic debut is one for the ages, platforming a personable, handsome leading man who can sing, dance and handle comedy with Peter Cushing to Omar Sharif…Kilmer had talent to spare, and Top Secret! is the place to see it on full display… Rated: 4/5 Apr 2, 2025 Full Review Farah Cheded A Good Movie To Watch A delightfully silly spoof [that] is blessedly under no illusions as to what we want from a movie like this. Lionel H there is not a single scene in this movie that is not hilarious. from the end less joke songs to the names of of the characters or latrine. I would watch this movie 20 times and still laugh. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/24/25 Full Review Ed . I'd rather pop a cyanide pill... Crass and juvenile, which I can accept if the dialog is funny. But it ain't very funny. Val Kilmer in his film debut showed his skills as a fine actor. Christopher Villiers also did a fine job. Otherwise, it's no secret this is a dud. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/22/25 Full Review Sergio A “Top Secret!” is one of the most ingenious comedies ever made. Its humor has not only stood the test of time but still surprises today with the creativity behind each scene. The jokes aren’t limited to dialogue, they’re carefully crafted through the script, editing, practical effects, and staging. Every shot is filled with comedic details, many of them visual, inviting multiple viewings to fully appreciate its brilliance. The film masterfully blends parody, satire, absurdity, and cultural references with impressive precision. Val Kilmer’s performance, in his cinematic debut, is magnetic, striking the perfect balance between deadpan seriousness and the film’s ridiculous situations, which makes everything even funnier. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/08/25 Full Review Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/03/25 Full Review Stephen C Success in 1.5 hours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/02/25 Full Review Matthew T The creators of Airplane!, Jim Abrahams and the Zucker brothers, famously referred to Top Secret! as their "jokebook" movie—and it shows. Rather than spoofing a single film, they throw a wild barrage of absurdist humor into a Cold War-era setting featuring a blonde Elvis stand-in, a ragtag team of French resistance fighters, and a melodramatic romance straight out of Casablanca. It’s as if the movie begins in the 1960s and time-warps back into the 1940s, never stopping to explain the shift. From the opening "surf and skeet" montage to the climactic underwater barroom brawl in East Germany, nothing about this film is remotely grounded in reality—and that’s entirely the point. It’s pure cinematic lunacy. Naturally, the film flopped at the box office. But what helped it earn cult classic status and eventual critical reevaluation comes down to two major strengths: The jokes are relentless and inventive—loaded with sight gags, wordplay, and visual absurdities that still catch you off guard. Val Kilmer is outstanding in his debut role as Nick Rivers, the rock ‘n’ roll heartthrob. He nails the tone, playing it completely straight while fully embracing the film’s screwball nature. His performance is effortlessly charming and pitch-perfect for the genre. Lucy Gutteridge also deserves praise as Hillary Flammond—an idealistic yet sharp heroine who balances innocence with a sly worldliness. Together with a strong supporting cast, they anchor the film’s relentless zaniness, helped by the film’s strong visual comedy and crisp timing. If there’s a flaw, it’s that the film runs a touch too long and doesn’t quite stick the landing. But the laughs are consistent right up to the end—whether it's full-on knee-slapping or just a steady stream of chuckles. If Top Secret! doesn’t make you laugh, it might just be that you don’t have a sense of humor. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/04/25 Full Review Read all reviews
