Michael Caine is perfect as the easy going, pot smoking british governor of a small forgotten carribean island that suddenly has to deal with british bureaucrats, american capitalists, cuban communist and french mercenaries. Very underrated but hilarious comedy/satire that is a lot of fun and the reggae soundtrack just makes this a real feel good movie.

When released this film attracted negative reviews by the British press at the time due to its irreverent look at colonial approach of the super powers of the time. I think this holds up well over the years, as we are far more aware of the impact of colonialism and how badly treated people were. Sure there are a few bits that have dated like white governor + lead rebel being key in saving the locals.

Best Comedy of all time, with many famous faces playing hilarious characters. yes it is a little of its time, and occasionally the acting is a bit ropey, but thats not really the point of this movie.

I never understood why this film flopped - I saw it when it came out and I saw it again recently - and I still find it brilliant. It is funny, crazy and takes the micky out of everything - I loved it.
