Stuffy young Latin instructor Arthur Chipping (Peter O'Toole) is widely disliked by his young charges at a small public school in Great Britain in the 1920s, until he finds his life turned around by charming music hall singer and comedienne Katherine Bridges (Petula Clark). Though her lower-class past impedes Chipping's longed-for rise to headmaster, the students become devoted to her good-hearted warmth, which also helps transform the once-despised "Chips" into a beloved school figure.

Pauline Kael New Yorker Herbert Ross has managed to keep it a gentle romance, and keep it fairly buoyant. What this all adds up to is that one can look at Peter O'Toole performance without too much pain. Jul 6, 2022 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Even at its worst, Chips is inoffensive in its sentimentality. At its best, it's the first film since The Two of Us that I genuinely feel deserves to be called heartwarming. Rated: 4/4 Oct 23, 2004 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com In Herbert Ross' musical version of the classic 1939 film, Peter O'Toole (Oscar-nominated) essays the role memorably played by Robert Donat, who won an Oscar. Perry Tyler Morning Telegraph (Texas) Rated: 3/5 Apr 26, 2005 Full Review Ken Hanke Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC) In many ways better than the 1939 film, this beautifully made movie is hurt by being a musical with indifferent songs. george m A pretty decent cast, but a very below average movie that even Peter O'Toole and Petula Clark could not carry this very slow moving, drawn out movie. Very disappointing back in the day and it has not aged well at all. Don't waste your time on this film. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review steve d The music brings nothing new to the story. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Found this movie fresh and superb, even 50 years later. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member I don't think this is Goodbye Mr. Chips. Rename it. It has nothing to do with James Hilton, Goodbye Mr. Chips or the original movie. Bad songs. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member A film that grows on you as it progresses. I clicked 'Play' quite randomly.. and felt rewarded. This film about a schoolteacher has an intermission in the middle (like Bollywood movies). Features music by John Williams and nice songs sung by both Petula Clark and Peter O'Toole! Shows us the English countryside and school buildings with beautiful exposed brick..and scenes shot at the ruins of Pompeii. Heartwarming in a nice, Britishy way! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member I found the movie mediocre. Perhaps it is the age of the film - but the musical numbers seemed forced, and the movie went on too long. I enjoyed the two leads - Peter O'Toole and Petula Clark. (by the way, the photo Flixster uses is from the 1939 version of the same movie) Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
