Based on the popular Marvel comic book, this film begins with Frank Castle (Dolph Lundgren) as a respected police officer dedicated to eradicating the Mafia's influence -- that is, until the mob responds with a lethal car bomb that decimates Castle's family. Now, filled with rage and presumed dead from the horrific explosion, Castle takes to the city's underground sewer tunnels to bring his own brutal brand of vigilante justice to the streets and wreak vengeance on those who killed his family.

Critics Consensus

Despite the seemingly indestructible Dolph Lundgren with a crossbow, The Punisher is a boring one-man battle with never-ending action scenes.

Carefully tended facial stubble trimmed to give him a skull-like appearance, Lundgren is truly impressive as a character defined by emotional emptiness. Go to Full Review

A terrible one-man-army action flick. The 2004 version is far more effective. Go to Full Review

See more Cees T 01/09/2025 Pretty tame for an R-rated movie. Then again, it's Disney property now. 7.4/10 - Very good. See more Eric G @Eric_Griffin 09/07/2024 Good action and funny lines, but very little character development at all. The plot is also strange and leaves you rooting for the mobsters to get their kids back more than you care about Frank Castle being the one to save them. The cops are very cliche all the way till the end when he's screaming for Frank on the roof. See more Vitoria F 07/17/2024 It looks like a 007 movie starring Stallone. Great action movie from the 80s, totally of its time. I loved the plot and the cast. See more Ross F 06/09/2024 Saw this movie when I was a kid, watched it recently and thought it was still an enjoyable action film. Think Dolph Lundgren was good in this film. It's a short entertaining action film. The plots simple, and though it doesn't have any recognised 'Punisher' villains, I don't see why it gets all the negativity. An easy watching, 80's action film, that isn't trying to reinvent the wheel. Worth a watch See more matthias s @Thescreenasvor 05/25/2024 As a comic book nerd, I had high hopes for "The Punisher," especially with Dolph Lundgren perfectly cast as Frank Castle. However, this over-the-top 80's action flick falls short as a comic adaptation. While Lundgren embodies the brooding vigilante, the film strays far from the source material, which is disappointing. Lady Tanaka is a fearless and worthy villain, yet she’s not from the comics, adding to the sense of betrayal for fans like me. The movie offers mindless action, but the lack of comic accuracy and a paper-thin plot make it less satisfying. Frank Castle’s traumatic backstory deserved more weight than the few flashbacks we got. If you’re into typical 80's action, you might enjoy this, but if you’re looking for a true comic book film, prepare to be let down. Following the comics more closely could’ve made this film really good. See more Read all reviews
