A well-constructed piece of studio work, with vivid black-and-white cinematography under matte painting skies that creates a turbulent, oppressive mood. Go to Full Review

Stevenson would go on to become Disney's most bankable director (Mary Poppins, The Love Bug, etc.), but don't expect any spoonfuls of sugar here: Jane Eyre is a dark, foreboding film. Go to Full Review

One of the best Hollywood versions of Bronte's classic text, largely due to Orson Welles' powerful performance, dark visuals, and ominous music by yje genius Bernard Herrmann. Go to Full Review

Cathy K. @choctawcat Aug 5 The acting was good but I didn’t care for the script. See more Alec B 12/13/2023 It guts the novel of a crucial plot element (unnecessarily so, as it's a rather short film), but the grand Gothic style is rather entertaining. Also, while Fontaine is solid as Eyre its Welles, who is absolutely perfect as Rochester, that steals the show. See more Will G. F 01/30/2023 It's literally too dark but Peggy is always adorable, plus orsen is cool. See more steve d 01/09/2023 Not among the best adaptations of the story. See more Luca D @JoeCamel7 03/09/2022 I really loved this movie. Joan Fontaine wouldn't have to say a word this whole movie and it would still be great, her facial expressions alone showing all of the emotion. Orson Welles gives his usual great performance with long dialogues that sound as if written by himself. Another black and white epic. No matter how many remakes they make of these film adaptations of gothic novels and novellas, they will never be as good as the 30s -40s black and white renditions. I would watch this movie again and again I could never see it getting old, if so maybe even better with age. See more deke p 02/15/2022 Wow! ORSON WELLES was terrific then. What a VOICE! I didn't know Jayne Eyre by Charlotte BRONTE was this kind of movie story. Sceery. Spooky. 1943. & June FONTAINE xlnt too. Never saw bfo The Movie Channel 13.3, 2.14.22. Not exactly the kind of love story for Valentines Day PS: shd watch first part agn See more Read all reviews
