Hot Shots! hits most of its parodic targets with aplomb, excelling as a daffy good time thanks to inspired gags and Charlie Sheen's crack comedic timing.

Jacob B I'll admit Hot Shots doesn't reach similar levels of hilarity as Airplane or The Naked Gun (in fairness, there aren't a lot of films made in a similar mold as Top Gun, which is probably why most audiences prefer the sequel from what I've heard) but it's still quite funny with jokes that stick the landing more often than not, actors who approach the roles with sincerity which ends up making some of the scenes funnier than if they acted as if they were in on the joke and paying homage to Top Gun without making watching that film feel like a strict requirement to enjoy this film. It might enhance the viewing experience but this is not one of those films where you have to do your homework to understand every tiny little joke. Overall, a fun spoof film that proves that its director could make an enjoyable comedy without having to rely on his buddies the Zucker brothers. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Cudalbu R A weird but interesting mix of funny and action. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Landon J Eh, I think there are many better comedies than this, many jokes didn't land on the aircraft carrier for me, and I'm a Nielson style comedy fan. Weirdly enough part two is actually better. This one has many more misses than hits unfortunately. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/14/24 Full Review Jay W When it comes to parody movies, most sites recommended the sequel to this film, "Hot Shots: Part Deux". Not much is mentioned about this first entry in the franchise; it is mainly seen as the lesser product. But this film is still a top-notch spoof film, (especially when the bar is set so low for that subgenre) What helps make these films work so well is how straitlaced the actors play it, while what is going on around them is so bizarre and absurd. But how can you do a feature length spoof of "Top Gun" and not have a volleyball scene? Not all the jokes may land. But if you are judging a comedy based on how many jokes it has per minute... this one is a hard topper. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review Rare T Satirical in many aspects, but conventional and sarcasm-worthy in some as well. Hotshots is meant to be taken with a grain of salt, otherwise a large portion of it would be inconsistent and irrelevant.
