In this spoof of "Top Gun," former U.S. Navy pilot Topper Harley (Charlie Sheen) is haunted by an accident in which his father lost control of a fighter jet. When Lt. Cmdr. James Block (Kevin Dunn) asks Topper to come out of retirement and help him complete a classified mission, Topper returns to active duty against the advice of his psychiatrist (Valeria Golino) and soon discovers that he may be a pawn in a devious arms manufacturing conspiracy.

Critics Consensus

Hot Shots! hits most of its parodic targets with aplomb, excelling as a daffy good time thanks to inspired gags and Charlie Sheen's crack comedic timing.

I admire the determination but the effect has worn off some. Maybe it's Sheen. Michael D L A funny Movie with a lot of humor added in a laugh a minute riot Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/30/25 Full Review Daniel B Que película más bizarra. Hot Shots! tells one of the funniest stories I’ve ever heard. This movie had me laughing the whole way through. I just didn’t love how some shots were executed. Didn’t seem to fit right with the overall story. Other than that, great film! Recommend it to people who love stupid comedies like me! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/10/25 Full Review Russell H Charlie Sheen was great and the humor and sets brought me back to the early 90s. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/18/25 Full Review Erik B From the golden era of parody films; this one [mostly] apes Top Gun, but definitely covers other ground as well. Hilariously acted and perfectly edited to continue the gut punches at a frenetic rate, this is a fun watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/23/25 Full Review Jacob B I'll admit Hot Shots doesn't reach similar levels of hilarity as Airplane or The Naked Gun (in fairness, there aren't a lot of films made in a similar mold as Top Gun, which is probably why most audiences prefer the sequel from what I've heard) but it's still quite funny with jokes that stick the landing more often than not, actors who approach the roles with sincerity which ends up making some of the scenes funnier than if they acted as if they were in on the joke and paying homage to Top Gun without making watching that film feel like a strict requirement to enjoy this film. It might enhance the viewing experience but this is not one of those films where you have to do your homework to understand every tiny little joke. Overall, a fun spoof film that proves that its director could make an enjoyable comedy without having to rely on his buddies the Zucker brothers.
