George Banks (Steve Martin) and his wife, Nina (Diane Keaton), are the proud parents of Annie (Kimberly Williams), but when she returns from studying abroad and announces that she's engaged, their whole world turns upside down, especially that of overprotective George. From meeting the in-laws to wedding plans with an over-the-top consultant (Martin Short) and his flamboyant assistant (B.D. Wong), it seems as if the troubles never end in this update of the classic Spencer Tracy comedy.

Critics Consensus

While it doesn't quite hit the heights of the original, this remake of the 1950 classic is pleasantly enjoyable, thanks in large part to winning performances from Steve Martin and Martin Short.

Henry Sheehan Hollywood Reporter The film's sole dramatic preoccupations are with broad physical comedy and unrealistically offbeat characterizations; a few moments of nominal pathos are really just structural pauses in the joke series. Dec 20, 2016 Full Review Richard Corliss TIME Magazine Neither the '90s nor the husband-wife team of Nancy Meyers and Charles Shyer (they wrote the new version, she co-produced, he directed) can match the original film's grace or wit. May 23, 2011 Full Review Empire Magazine The film does work, but not quite as well as the Hepburn-Tracy classic that it seeks to replace. Mildly amusing. Rated: 3/5 May 23, 2011 Full Review Mike Davies Birmingham Post Despite the cliches, shameless sentimentality and rampant unsubtlety, it’s an engagingly enjoyable comedy tear-jerker. Apr 13, 2022 Full Review Rachel Wagner Rachel's Reviews (YouTube) My favorite performance from Steve Martin especially the scene where he flips out over hot dogs Nov 27, 2020 Full Review Malcolm Johnson Hartford Courant Beyond its personally threatening nature, and its unnerving idea about laying out a life's hoardings for a single unrewarding day, this new version of the romantic comedy first filmed by Vincente Minnelli in 1950 feels false. Audience Member finally, the parents pov Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/02/24 Full Review Dale R Steve Martin stars as the reluctant father of the bride. My biggest complaint for this film is that there is too much narration for a visual medium. Beyond that this is a good film with some comedic moments and a few emotional ones too. Steve Martin doesn’t get many comedic scenes, but he does come through on the emotional ones really well. The comedy comes from Martin Short who plays the wedding planner. This one will hit you in the feels if you have a daughter! Good movie, for a single viewing. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/10/24 Full Review SkyRo P "Father of the Bride" is a film that had eluded me for years, but I finally decided to give it a watch, and I must say, it was a pleasant surprise. Steve Martin delivers a stellar performance as the overbearing father who struggles to come to terms with his daughter's impending marriage. His portrayal of a dad who is reluctantly accepting that his daughter is moving on is both comedic and touching. The film's over-the-top, ridiculous antics and 90s humor add to its charm, making it a delightful and rewatchable classic. It's a reminder of a time when movies were made with a different kind of humor that is often missing in modern films. "Father of the Bride" stands out as a timeless gem that is worth revisiting multiple times. Its availability on streaming platforms allows audiences to rediscover and appreciate the magic of classic films like this one. I highly recommend giving it a watch for a dose of heartwarming humor. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/29/24 Full Review Audience Member A near perfect movie. Yes it’s all very hallmark but it feels genuine. Martin Short steals the show as the wedding coordinator lol. One of my all time comfort movies. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/18/24 Full Review Brian D 3/19/24: 74% Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/19/24 Full Review Dave C A genuinely spritely, good-natured family comedy that stands the test of time. The charm of SM and DK make this, and the comedic oddball MS gives cause for lots of laughs Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/01/24 Full Review Read all reviews
