Steve D The strange translation to the screen does not work. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/08/23 Full Review Audience Member It's difficult to try to take a 6 hour play and boil it down to a 2 hour film. The voiceovers of the characters thoughts just does not work. It lampoons the glorification of wealth and romantic love. The makeup effects are good and Shearer is great. The highlight of the movie is the ending. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member Norma Shearer = the Meryl Streep of her generation and the reason to watch this film adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's play. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Strange Interlude (1932) This story by Eugene O'Neill, is one of those two-hanky melodramas that your grandmother ate up. In this film you can hear what people are thinking in voice-over, all the while, trying to keep their nice and composed, polite feelings in check between each other. Charlie Marsden (Ralph Morgan) is madly in love with Nina Leeds (Norma Shearer) but is too shy, timid, or weak to tell her himself. Plus she morning over a past love with Gordan, an aviator who died in World War I. He's resigned to just stay good friends. Nina now, marries rich Sam Evans (Alexander Kirkland) on the rebound, only to learn of the family curse of mentally illness. Determined to have a son and heir to the family fortune from the matronly Mrs. Evans (May Robson) she gets knocked up with her doctor friend, Ned Darrell (Clark Gable). Her son Gordon Evans, who later grows up and is played by Robert Young. Gable's part is just window dressing and arm candy to Nina's inner drama, but it's still great to see and you really get drawn into this tragic story. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member It?s very well produced but a bit too melodramatic and talky for my taste. I normally love Norma Shearer, but her performance doesn?t ring true. She?s not bad, just not magnificent like she usually is. Good support from Frank Morgan and May Robson. Fine art direction.
