      Critics Consensus

Cool World throws a small handful of visual sparks, but they aren't enough to distract from the screenplay's thin characters and scattered plot. Read critic reviews

      Movie Info

After a bizarre incident, Frank Harris (Brad Pitt) is transported into the cartoon realm of Cool World, where he remains the only human among various animated characters for years. Eventually, artist Jack Deebs (Gabriel Byrne) also enters Cool World and sets his lustful sights on his own creation, a blond bombshell named Holli Would (Kim Basinger). However, excessive intermingling between cartoons and humans is said to lead to dire consequences, a risk Jack seems ready to take.

This is hands-down one of the worst films I have ever seen. I'd even go so far as to say that it's in my top 5 worst films ever, and I've seen a lot of bad movies. Do not watch this. It's so bad it's emotionally exhausting to watch.

Anything but cool, Cool World is a bizarre mixture of live-action and animation. The story follows a doodle named Holli from the animated realm Cool World who's trying to cross over to the real-world. Starring Brad Pitt, Kim Basinger, and Gabriel Byrne, the cast has some talent; but they're not used particularly well. Additionally, the animated character designs are incredibly generic and dirty. But what really hurts the film is Ralph Bakshi's directing, which is overly busy with nonsensical cartoon action that's not related to what's happening in the scenes. And, the actors are poorly integrated into the animation (and vice versa). A crazy mess of a film, Cool World tries to do too much and ends up failing at everything.

At first glance this just comes across as a more adult version of 'Roger Rabbit' and you'd be right basically. The plot is almost the same kind of thing involving a toon (they are called doodles) trying to get into the real world and then turn it into another toon world, pretty basic idea. Bakshi tries again with animation but fails to capture anything of greatness here with this poor film, the film looks good in the animated world, background wise, but the actual animated characters all look horrible and badly designed. The animation of the characters is pretty shoddy looking and can't compare to 'Roger Rabbit' or any classic Warner Bros/Hanna Barbera toons, the only character that does move well is the femme fatale 'Holli'. Plus the live cast simply don't mix well with the animated characters, far too obvious. The only bit of interest in the film is the fact that its slightly adult based and shows toons being 'killed', toons showing their butts, swearing a little, mild sexual references and the character 'Holli' shows quite a bit of ass n knickers throughout which we all wanted 'Jessica Rabbit' to do haha. Cast is wildly different in terms of skills, Pitt looks the part but simply can't act too well full stop, Basinger doesn't look anywhere near as good as her cartoon version lol! and she too can't act to save her life (not that hot either in my opinion) and Byrne is way too good for this kind of silliness and shows himself up really. Mainly the animation gives it some appeal and it is somewhat of a cult, slightly, but falls well short of a decent film and makes little sense really.

repulsive, repellent, distasteful. Not funny at all... Ralph Bakshi failed at relaunching his career (This film gives me the creeps when i watched it when I was little) Despite all these negativity, the visual effect and set design were quite creative
