Adm. Jonathan Scott (Gary Cooper) has spent his entire naval career touting the value of aircraft carriers. His experiences as a pilot reinforce his belief that aviation is a key component of any successful military, though his superiors largely ignore him. When an encounter with a high-ranking diplomat turns ugly, Scott is demoted to pushing papers in a dead-end administrative job. Everything changes when the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor and Scott is offered the chance to prove he's right.

A gripping film of navy and navy air force operations in World War II, made, unbelievably realistic in spots by clever insertion of action shots of actual combat in the Pacific. Go to Full Review

Steve D 01/07/2024 Nowhere near Cooper's best. Slow and aimless. See more Russ 12/23/2023 Post-war audiences probably enjoyed this mix of predictable Hollywood fluff and stock footage. The writers snuck in an inside joke - Cooper's Navy buddies give him a copy of "A Farewell to Arms" while he's in the hospital; Cooper had the lead in a movie version years earlier. See more 06/16/2015 Big, expensive, and sometimes boring. See more 05/12/2014 good historic actioner See more 05/10/2008 Weak script, and historically not very accurate. The battle scenes, mostly taken from actual WW2 battle footage, were certainly worth watching though. See more Read all reviews
