Mark R. Leeper Mark Leeper's Reviews THE BLACK SCORPION is actually a better monster movie than I had remembered. True, there are a few embarrassing touches, but there are also some subtle touches in the script, and it boasts the effects work of Willis O'Brien, creator of KING KONG. Rated: 6/10 Sep 14, 2022 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy It isn't on par with such gems as Them! and Tarantula!, but it's a far better bet than The Giant Claw. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 30, 2021 Full Review John Beifuss Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN) Arriving at the (stinger-equipped) tail end of the Cold War-inspired cycle of films about apocalyptic arthropods, 'The Black Scorpion' benefits from its spectacular monsters. Rated: 3/4 Apr 10, 2015 Full Review Mark Bourne DVDJournal.com ...a drive-in programmer that's run-of-the-mill even by period B-flick standards. Blobbo X Blobbo think will make peanut butter sandwich with jelly. Oh, sorry, was watching movie for review. Guess mind-blob drifted. Hm, where put peanut butter? Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/30/24 Full Review Monsol E Actually a pretty fun monster flick! The story is straightforward "volcano go boom, and now big bugs from underground are free, and hangry." The cast is likeable, the locale of a volcanic mexican town is fun, and the stop motion / creature effects were pretty good for the time. A solid watch if you're in the mood for old monster movies! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/03/23 Full Review Shadowman4710 The 67% critic score is a bit baffling to be honest. Is this the worst movie I've ever seen? No, not even close but it's not very good either. An obvious attempt to cash in on the success of "Them" (1954) this giant, monster movie is a reasonable attempt but falls short on a number of levels, particularly the direction and special effects. The leads are fine but the rest of the cast is uneven at best. This film is of interest to fans of these kinds of movies but most people are going to want to skip it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/01/23 Full Review Barney F The movie actually makes more sense than other giant insect/ chelicerate movies. I love the good old fashion claymation. It's low budget using sound effects from other old monster movies, particularly "Them" but a must see. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/20/23 Full Review Michael C "The Black Scorpion" is a well made and entertaining movie. This 1957 sci-fi thriller seems to have stood the test of time in a few ways. The special effects have held up well even by today's standards. The cast does a good job in their respective roles. My only problem with the movie is I just saw too much of the 1954 classic "Them!". In fact the sounds the killer scorpions make is taken directly from "Them!". From the scenes of the two lead scientists going into the scorpion's lair to the scenes of the military uselessly shooting at the creatures, it was too much of a distraction. Despite the flaws I think "The Black Scorpion" is worth seeing at least once. It's not particularly memorable, but it is entertaining. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/21/23 Full Review CodyZamboni Movie is better than the normal giant bug attack 1950s B picture. Most memorable are the mostly top notch stop motion animation of the enormous beasts. Movie has alot of action, both small and large scale horror attacks. Film's most effective sequence is an eerie and intense scene, where our heroes are lowered into a huge volcanic cavern and get to meet the title boss monster. Demerits include a very annoying kid that keeps getting in the way, and an unnecessary love interest sub plot betwen Richard Denning and a cattle baroness. That said, she does live in an opulent ranch house. I was amazed at its' interior design and decor. That was a cool looking house. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews
