Dan Callahan Slant Magazine This version of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, made A.G. (After Garbo), was not a success when it was first released, and it's still a failure now, but it's an often exquisitely sumptuous misfire, all the same. Rated: 3/4 May 1, 2007 Full Review Phil Hall Film Threat Superb film version of the Tolstoy novel, with an extraordinary Vivien Leigh at the peak of her beauty and talent. Joel H Unlike Lisa Turtle in the TV series Saved by the Bell, I did not cry at the end of Anna Karenina. It was tragic, yes, to see characters make such poor choices, but I felt more frustrated than sad because of their actions. I also didn’t buy the alleged chemistry between Anna and Count Vronsky. It felt forced, even though Vivian Leigh gives a good performance. I imagine that there is much more to the story in Leo Tolstoy’s novel, but let’s face it, I doubt I’ll be reading that anytime soon. However, I did appreciate the condensed version of the story, so I at least know what Anna Karenina is all about. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/27/24 Full Review Steve D Solid version because of Leigh. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/20/24 Full Review georgan g It was confusing to me why Anna broke up with her lover after all she went through to be with him. Besides, what kind of mother would leave her child for a man? The acting was ok, but a tad overdone. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Quite good, although the Levin-Kitty angle, so crucial to the book, is given very little air time. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Really quite intriguing considering the fact that the romance is competely doomed from the beginning. It's quite an accomplishment. THe subttleties are amazing. Great direction. The 2012 version sucks compared to this classic. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Beautifully filmed, this adaption is as lush and romantic as Vivien Leigh, herself. The costumes and sets shine through the B&W filming - the problem is the shifty storytelling, which somehow jumps around and loses the viewer a bit. Still, worth a viewing, and certainly a delight to classic cinema lovers. 3 1/2+ stars Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Read all reviews
