Like the Anna Sewell novel that inspired it, this film adaptation is told from the perspective of a majestic stallion named Black Beauty (Alan Cumming). As a colt, Black Beauty has a relaxed life in the English countryside, owned by the kindly farmer Grey (Sean Bean). However, later in life, he is forced to work as a taxi horse in London. As an aged horse, Black Beauty finds himself in the care of loving owners again, but only after a series of thrilling hardships and triumphs.

Jonathan Romney Guardian There's so much joyous frisking that it looks like an extended ad for Lloyds Bank. Mar 2, 2024 Full Review Geoff Brown The Times (UK) This is a gloomy film, briefly enlivened by salty acting, but difficult to warm to, unless you are a horse. Mar 1, 2024 Full Review Variety Staff Variety Although already filmed three times in the sound era, Black Beauty has never been put onscreen faithfully or well, a situation partially remedied by this affecting, rather grave rendition of the children's perennial. Mar 26, 2009 Full Review Philip French Observer (UK) It's not exactly on a par with Bresson's Au Hasard Balthazar, but it will have the kids in tears. Mar 1, 2024 Full Review Mal Vincent The Virginian-Pilot The film's episodic nature may work against sustained involvement, but it shows us Black Beauty's nomadic existence. brittany r One of the best and most realistic films of all. Black beauty is a Thoroughbred. He is born on a realistic farm and trained well the way many Thoroughbreds start their lives. He gets sold into the unknown fate from auctions at that time. Pretty realistic and goes into an unknown fate. He has luck on his hand with his good training to his friendly caring disposition. He meets Ginger another Thoroughbred who wasn’t so lucky and had the unfortunate fate of many other Thoroughbreds such as mishandling, not as good of training, abusive, and tough life many Thoroughbreds face in real life especially during that point. Yet different breeds were used for carriage at that time. Yet these two horses were indeed Thoroughbreds both in the books and in the original film including the cast horses. One boy loves these horses. For some horses like Ginger the boy and the first farm Ginger lived at with black beauty would be the only ounce of kindness she’d ever face in her life. In history before developing new fancier carriage breeds Thoroughbreds for a started to be used for almost everything. Thoroughbreds when first developed became the superior horse for a time replacing draft horses and other pulling or pack ponies. They became driving horses as well as multi use to sports horses. After the Thoroughbred became popular they started using the breed to develop other crosses which developed common carriage horse breeds, these breeds include the Cleveland bay, hackney horse , hackney pony, other extinct harness horses such as the old English black, thoroughbred draft crosses, Maremmano, and even saddlebreds. Thoroughbreds were used for multiple things. As we see black beauty go from a hack horse to a fine carriage horse to a form of street transportation to a light blow horse to a finally going into retirement. Ginger lost the good stable yet used her in many typical disciplines such as steeple chase. Ginger was taken out of the fine carriage work due to her hotter temper and her reaction of mistreatment. This is why many people realized Thoroughbreds were not a favored horse for every discipline creating likings to Thorougbred draft & pony crosses as they started to develop alternatives to the Thoroughbred. Ginger Saddly we sold into the same driving business as black beauty yet through the many wrong hands thoroughbreds used to wind up in. Merry Legs was the perfect little welsh wealthy kids tea party pony of the time. Stubborn little pony with flare. While Gingers life ended early in war of a tough life and never makes it out to greener pastures as many didn’t prior to band on slaughters. Black beauty lucky to be bought of the auction again for retirement. Merry legs we will never know but great how the movie showed the different classes or lives of people during that time. A real chance luck of a boy who truly loved black beauty to be lucky enough to find him again in the end. Many people part with beloved horses for various reasons and not always are you reunited with a special horse.! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/13/25 Full Review Kristin M This movie made my childhood!
