As a young girl, aristocrat Lorna (Madge Bellamy) meets and befriends John Ridd (John Bowers), a sweet farm boy whom she immediately adores. Soon after, Lorna is kidnapped by Sir Ensor Doone (Frank Keenan) and raised among his band of outlaws, unaware of her royal lineage. Good-natured Sir Ensor protects Lorna from the others -- but when he becomes gravely ill, a young, violent outlaw decides to claim Lorna as his own. She soon realizes that she must somehow contact John, so he can rescue her.

For four reels, Lorna Doone throbs along at a terrific rate. It is vivid, stirring and charged with action. But then its energy is spent -- its punch is vanished -- and it stumbles feebly to a weak finish.

Elegant visual storytelling from a visionary pioneer. I have a shot saved on my DVD screensaver of the abandoned carriage, ocean waves lapping at its wheels...more affecting than any violence you could depict on-screen...

I was shocked at how much I actually enjoyed this very good silent film. The acting is not as melodramatic as many silent films, and the actors are portraying very humble characters. The score is hauntingly fantastic and is the aspect of the movie that I remember the most.

Synopsis
