J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Awesome battle scenes are woven into the story of a family caught up in the currents of history. What's missing is the strong personal feeling that Griffith --whose father fought for the Confederacy -- brought to his story of Reconstruction. Rated: 2/4 Oct 5, 2015 Full Review María Luz Morales (Felipe Centeno) La Vanguardia (Spain) America is, thanks to the push of its director, a great film. Lionel Barrymore's performance is worthy of all praise. Oct 5, 2015 Full Review TV Guide Staff TV Guide What had begun as a stirring saga about a group of ordinary people caught up in the sweep of history degenerates into a potboiler in which history is reduced to local color. Rated: 2.5/5 Oct 5, 2015 Full Review Bob Bloom Journal and Courier (Lafayette, IN) One of Griffith's last great films; a pageant about the American fight for freedom. Rated: 3/5 Nov 21, 2007 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com Griffith's epic spectacle about the Revolutionary War was based on his 1907 play, War.
