... a glamourless and harsh portrait of war as an unending march through mud, blood, exhaustion, mental collapse and the everyday reality of abrupt death. Wellman’s blunt, documentary-like photography gives it the immediacy of a newsreel. Go to Full Review

Eighty years later, its flaws are more apparent, but it holds up much better than most of its ilk and era. Go to Full Review

Ernie Pyle may provide the eyes and ears, but it’s the heroic exploits of American foot soldiers that drive the film, thus falling perfectly in line with Pyle’s philosophy of honoring the men in the most humane way possible. Go to Full Review

As stories go, G.I. Joe is well put together, because it is cemented into a kind of cohesive whole by such stuff as blood and tears, dirt and laughter, fears and grandeur. Go to Full Review

Though it's considered a seminal war film, The Story of G.I. Joe hasn't aged particularly well, focusing on generic dogfaces instead of legendary correspondent Ernie Pyle. Go to Full Review

David S 11/23/2024 As close to authentic as you're going to get here- given the time it was made - taking place in a horrific setting in history -with some genuine performances. See more Jeff S @jeffstone 02/09/2024 A poignant movie taken to another level by the exquisite dialogue between Meredith and Mitchum. See more paul d @PaulusLoZebra 12/12/2021 William Wellman's Story of GI Joe is a very good, realistic and sympathetic war film that has, unfortunately, not aged well due to the jarring martial music that accompanies every major scene transition. Except for that, the film provides an insightful and tender look into the lives, and deaths of ordinary soldiers in the foot wars. One difficult thing for modern audiences is that the movie spends very little time on Ernie Pyle. That's because in 1945 every American knew the name of the country's most famous and beloved war correspondent. Today's audiences need to simply accept that on faith. Robert Mitchum shines very, very brightly in an understated and deeply humane performance. See more steve d 07/22/2020 Forgettable but earnest. See more ashley h @ashleyhobgood87 11/30/2019 The Story of G.I. Joe is an excellent film. It is about Pulitzer prize winner and war correspondent Ernie Pyle who joins the army during WWII. Burgess Meredith and Robert Mitchum give fantastic performances. The screenplay is well written. William A. Wellman did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the drama. The Story of G.I. Joe is a must see. See more 03/30/2018 The tale of how Pulitzer winner Ernie Pyle embedded himself into & related to troops as they fought slowly through Italy during WWII. Pyle co-wrote the script, and specifically asked that Burgess Meredith portray him. Pyle died in the Pacific theater a few weeks before this film was released. Several of the supporting cast were some of the hundreds of soldiers who had briefly met Pyle in Italy, adding to the realism of this Hollywood biopic. See more Read all reviews
