Critics Consensus

Some humor is hit or miss, depending on the audience tastes, but the movie is funny overall. Mixed reviews for the cast, especially for MTV's Tom Green.

Nell Minow Common Sense Media Vulgar for some parents, but teens will love. Rated: 2/5 Dec 28, 2010 Full Review Tom Long Detroit News Road Trip is the best dumb party movie of the year; if that's what you've been craving, buckle up. Rated: 3/4 Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Mike Clark USA Today The movie takes a slice out of the American Pie recipe book by at least making the final screen product funnier than the trailer. Rated: 2.5/4 Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy There are a few amusing bits, but one’s overall enjoyment of the film will depend on how much one appreciates such gags as a fat cook placing French toast between his butt cheeks and then serving it to a customer, or Tom Green tonguing a live mouse. Rated: 2/4 Jul 6, 2025 Full Review Nick Rogers Midwest Film Journal Beyond zeitgeist-seizing turns from Tom Green and Seann William Scott and the breakout of DJ Qualls, it's a stump-dumb but solidly funny comedy that, like the Farrelly Brothers, stays generally sweet while tiptoeing to the edge of R-rated offensiveness. Rated: 3.5/5 Jun 29, 2025 Full Review Don Shanahan Film Obsessive All of these wild pursuits are a time capsule to a pre-smartphone era where maps, lodging, phone communication, and finding cash to keep going were as improvised and random as the wind beneath their wings. Yash B I will admit that "Road Trip" definitely had some moments that made me laugh. The problem is that a lot of the clearly comedic moments just didn't hit for me. There are plenty of gross and raunchy laughs I would expect from an early 2000s R-rated comedy, but it doesn't compare to some of the others in a similar category. The premise also doesn't leave the main characters particularly likable, and I never really found myself rooting for any of them. Overall, it is a strange movie that is clearly a product of its time, but it also isn't as good as some similar movies from the same time that still hit today. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/02/25 Full Review Emily K. Hilariously stupid. Definitely rating this with a comedy scale in mind though. I enjoyed the story and the winding plot kept me curious. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/19/25 Full Review Adam B. The movie was really funny. It was super humorous. A lot of laughs. Highly recommended 100%. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/17/25 Full Review Dani G Just awful... how could anyone give a part to Tom Green in anything? If we substract him, maybe the movie is like 8% better. I still don't understand how this same Todd Phillips is the author of Joker, considering the rest of his work (except for the first Hangover film) Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/11/25 Full Review Jose G Very funny! Outrageous, clever, and well made! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/27/25 Full Review Cudalbu R Not the worst movie you could watch if you're bored or if you attend college and are bored.
